Good Points

Cheap tax, high mpg.

Bad Points

Repetitive fault.

General Comments

Replaced faultless 1.8 tdci focus with fiesta 1.4 tdci which has a repetitive fault (3RD TIME BACK TO DEALER IN 6 MONTHS!) of problem with engine "ticking" noise, Ford dealer say, its a fuel injector seal failure, strong smell of diesel/fumes inside car. I used the same vehicles at my workplace and one of those also has same "ticking" noise....anyone else had this problem?

I bought my 05 plate from a Ford dealer 3 weeks ago. It also makes the ticking noise, especially on acceleration, sounds a bit like the 'pinking sound you can get with a petrol. This is my first diesel and I heard the noise on the test drive, the salesman said it was a 'normal' injectors sound. Not sure if I can get this looked into by Ford under the warranty (1 year left). Best mpg so far is 54.8 with very careful driving. I've read other reviewers say the 62 av figure is not achievable. Whether the 'ticking' noise adversley affects mpg, I don't know. Otherwise. I'm very pleased with the car which is a hell of a lot cheaper to run than my old 1.8 petrol Mondeo. £35 annual tax helps!

53 plate Fiesta 1.4TDCi 50,000 on the clock has just cost me £300 to have 2 fuel injector seals replaced. Mechanic has said he's not seen too many like this so here's hoping.

I have exactly the same problem. It's just been on repair for 2nd time.

Rang dealer last week explaining fault with 2004 Fiesta 1.4TDI done 31,000. Was advised by service manager that he knew what this was and i said "Oh its on a recall then?" He advised me it was not a recall but there was a "concern"!
I immediately rang Ford UK and they have advised me to file a grievance through my Ford dealer which I am going to do on Tuesday (25th March 2008). Have been advised that it has been happening to much newer cars with less mileage. Faulty seal has not been modified and they are fitting the same part!

my fiesta zetec 53 has just started ticking! is that £300 per seal? took it in to local garage and they advised to go to Ford which I'm not happy about really. Any news on recall?

Had same problem on 52 car. Took it to indipendant repairer, cost £80.00 to replace seals. Been OK for last 3000 miles... apart from front suspension spring snapping.

Just had same problem with my September 2004 1.4 tdci - only done 25,000 miles - sounds like £250.00 + job according to dealer. Never had problems like this over prevoious 14 years with my previous Fiesta 1.6 and 1.8 diesels - anyone had luck with a complaint to Ford?

Update..I have now had another common problem happen.
The alternator has packed up! A few days before, the spedometer stopped working & a misfire developed.
Still all o.k now.... just cost me another £225...I love this car!!
    (Honda here I come!!)

  • darlo ned on 23rd Jun 2009

I am told that this is a common problem. I have an 04 fiesta, 41,000 m. Kept smelling fumes when getting out of car and coming through heater. Told by local garage that injector seals are leaking but they could not do it. Quote from ford for four seals is £295. Going to Diesel injector specialist for quote tomorrow. Will post result

  • darlo ned on 25th Jun 2009

I took the Fiesta to an independant garage. They replaced the injector seals and plastic inserts for £115. A saving of £180!. Not bad eh....so no worries, just avoid the main dealers ....like the plague!!!!!

  • russp1980 on 30th Jun 2009

I've got the same problem on my 05 TDCi 36000m. Ticking noise and slight smell of fumes I've just been quoted £455(!!!!) from the dealer to replace the injectors! I'll be getting an independent quote needless to say.
