Good Points

+Quality DVD playback and recording. Recording is even good quality when compression setting is higher than average, for longer record times.
+Upscaled/progressive DVD option actually makes a big difference, for fixed-pixel displays.
+Recorded programmes, from this recorder, play fine in my computer (compatibility).
+VideoPlus and automatic titling for recorded programmes.
+The machine is quiet and also fast at loading and starting up (well, in comparison to my previous DVD recorder).
+Divx /Xvid is a nice addition and works fine. Common subtitle files are supported.
+Lots of connectivity inputs/outputs. This even includes firewire and USB inputs.
+Multi-region capable.
+Shipped with a free HDMI cable!

Bad Points

-Have to go into the TV Guide menu to see what is currently broadcasting on other stations.
-Unscaled video quality, for Freeview, is negligible.
-Cannot add chapters manually, for recording, unless the source is an external device.

General Comments

For the price, the DVDR5500 actually offers a lot of options and capability. Some may say it is a shame that it does not have a built in hard drive, but there are more expensive versions, of this model, that do (certain Philips PVRs). Since I am not interested in having a PVR, this model turned out to be near perfect, for me.
