General Comments

For many years I had always relied on a Game boy to entertain me on the move, and when Sony announced they were going to give it a go I was a little intrigued as to how they would better NIntendo...after all they have been in the game for ever and were going to take some rivaling...let alone beating it....but you know what...I believe Sony have pulled it off with this little beauty....and what a beauty it is.
Before you critics out there think I'm a Sony fan...''I'M NOT''...I have never took to the Play station and have bought every other home games console out there bar a Sony...so for me to go purchase a mobile one was out of the ordinary for me.....So what made me buy one...WELL...it goes like this.
I first saw one in action in my local games store behind one of those glass cases and they were running a Tiger Woods Demo and the graphics just blew me away...I never realized that a game could look SO realistic on a hand held. After a little more investigation as to what else this device offered I went to the shop and bought one with several other games to keep me amused.....But it doesn't stop there...With the ability to play music (MP3) and Movies (Mpeg 4) and view your photos (J-Peg) all in glorious wide screen was just icing on the cake....plus the ability to surf the web (something I have never done myself but have seen demonstrated)...
I have watched one movie from a UMB source and it looked fabulous on the highly detailed screen....but since then I have converted my own movies to Mpeg 4 with just as much success and viewing them was fantastic after working out just how small to make them and still retain good quality...I can now get 3 movies onto a 1Gb memory stick and still save a few games to boot...I've since upgraded to a 4Gb memory stick and that has made this hand held a portable entertainment system in it's own right...Ok ..Ok...so it don't have a phone.....so what...!!!..I now have the ability to have as many as 12 movies on tap....thousands of tracks of music and even thousands of pictures...or a mixture of each so I can never be bored with something to do while out on the road...even down to surfing the web after you set up an account.
The Sony PSP is a real grown up piece of kit...and to be honest...to good for kids...but hey....I doubt the kids will see it that way as long as they get one for Xmas or a birthday....but parents be warned ...if you want to keep that gorgeous screen scratch free for the kids get a screen protector for safety,s sake. It's finished overhaul in a black piano high gloss and a quick wipe over with the supplied cloth brings it back to new in a jif.
I've heard of reports that the battery life is poor...but I think the 5 hours I get is more then adequate...it also gives the eyes and ears a rest while it's re-charging....which by the way can be done via a mains adapter or the computer when attached with the own bought lead. The screen itself is a good size even for those who's eyesight might be a little worn...and the interface is a easy to use too...The actual buttons you use for the games are adequate to,giving a positive feel and the mini joy stick also feels like it's up to the job as long as you don't yank it too vigorously...I'm quite heavy handed and have not broken mine yet,but they can be easily replaced for a few pounds.Since it's launch, there have been many extras developed also to make the PSP an even better experience especially in the battery department...there's now a device that makes holding the PSP more comfortable (not that it's uncomfortable) with a built in battery of a larger capacity and a memory card...and even external speakers, just in case in ear phones are a pain for you...talking of which...the supplied ear phones are of good quality and should suffice most needs and are very comfortable...but I dare say someone will always complain that they can be bettered.
I'm not going to into any technical specs...look those up for yourself on the internet....but when and if you decide to buy a hand held....Nintendo no longer rule the roost..well not in my opinion(and I've been a fan for years)...take a peek at the Sony PSP and be ready to me amazed at what this wonderful piece of technology can offer...I love mine and have extracted all of it's potential to the full....and so will you.....you own't be dissapointed
