General Comments

I got this Crosman Ratcatcher Air Rifle a month ago and have since added the 24" barrel from the 2260 and a metal breech with longer pusher. These modifications have improved accuracy, power and consistency. I now get 50 good shots from a 12g capsule, each powerful enough to clean out an apple at 30 yards. How about 1/2 inch group at 25 yards with 15 shots. Vermin beware! Half the fun of this gun is in the modifications. Will probably fit a bipod for steadier shooting. May change the hammer spring for even more power. Gas power means no spring to cock and no recoil. That makes shoting faster and more fun. If you want a cheap gun (£105 with scope)which packs a solid punch then this is the one for you. Build quality on mine is good, plus its light so easy to carry around on a hunt. Modifications can be done cheap and easily. What more do you want?!

Have upgraded further since writing this review. Got a F1 chronograph and was surprised to find that with the 24 inch barrel and metal breech the Ratcatcher was only putting out 7.66 ft/lbs energy which is around 491 fps. Changed the hammer spring to a stronger one and WOW! 605 fps (11.66 ft/lbs muzzle energy). Have added the Logun bipod and a better silencer. Get about 10-12 shots per CO2 capsule at full power. Am very impressed with this rifle. Still as accurate as before (i.e. 1/2 inch groups at 25 yards) but now with proper hunting power. Definitely recommend getting one of these rifles and tinkering with it is extremely satisfying.

    Interesting!
I am about to purchase said airgun for my son who is 13 yrs old.
We go lamping regularly but his Benjamin Sheridan pump up is a bit on the heavy side for him as he is only small for his age.
In normal trim I dont think the ratcatcher is up to the job of bunny bashing but I would like to know which hammer spring you fitted for the extra power.
I will supply e-mail address for you to reply.

Can you let me know where to get mod kits too.

The hammer springs I used were purchased from T.R.Robb in the Uk. To get the extra power I also ordered the 24 inch barrel from T.R.Robb which in combination with the stronger hammer springs pushed the power upto 11.66 foot pounds muzzle energy. This would use up the gas much faster from the CO2 capsule giving only 10 decent shots with that amount of power. But for such a light, compact rifle its hard to beat. Only problem is with CO2 the low temperatures of winter mean the gas expands less hence the power output of the rifle will be lower. I wouldn't shoot rabbits with this rifle at ranges over 25 yards to be ensured of a humane kill. Modifications are easy to do, and a video detailing modifications can be bought from the same place. The website is:

    Hope that helps. Good hunting..

I bought a crosman ratcatcher about a weak ago and very happy with it. But I would like it more powerful so I am certain it will kill an animal in one shot. So I was wondering how you put a new hammersting in the gun. If you could help that would be great.

Hi, Im in the middle of modin my ratcatcher and I was just wondering which silencer you have fitted and how effective it is.

  7. psg001 Rank: Staff Sergeant on 11th Apr 2004

I purchased a few silencers for the ratcatcher, but found none to be better than the standard red tip silenecer which is recommended for the rifle.

As it is sub 12 ft/lb energy, this silence will suffice. To change hammer spring, simply remove stock, and unscrew the 2 screws above and below the rear sight. Rear cap should pop off and hammer spring come out. Easy.

Thanks for explaining to me how to put the hammer spring in . My ratcatcher recently went wrong but I now have a new one and I had my first kill with it. I was impressed that it killed a pigeon as it is at the moment the original power.

Help ! My dawn till dusk scope moves about on the (not very) pro blocks on my Ratcatcher and wont stay in zero, can a scope receiving metal breech mod. be purchased in the UK for the Ratcatcher ?

  10. TMaxxJJ on 22nd May 2004

Yes, I have one from crooked barn and its the muts nuts. It holds the scope better and makes the whole rifle more study. Plus it has a longer pusher so you will get slightly more power.

  11. triker phil on 24th May 2004

Cheers TMaxx, sorted now, I am in the UK and got one from T.R.Robbs and what a difference, done the trigger mod as well makes the action a lot sweeter! sticking with the stock barrel tho as it fits under my barbour jacket just nice lol. Question peeps, anybody tried their ratty on bulk AIR instead of Co2 would realy like to know how they perform thanx?
    Phil.
