Massive selection of cars in stock
Seriously overpriced
Clingy, obsessive salespeople
Aggressive sales tactics
I called in to the Newport branch of Carcraft this afternoon while out browsing for a new car for my girlfriend. Initial impressions were very good. Upon arrival we were greeted by a friendly staff member who inquired as to what exactly we were looking for. We replied that we were looking for a small runabout (Corsa, Fiesta, Punto etc) with a budget of £3,500 with a car to part exchange as well. We were taken to the back of the showroom where all the smaller cars were stored. It was quickly apparent that we would not be able to afford any of the cars on display, since each one was at least £2,000 over the average book price! For example, an 04 plate Vauxhall Corsa SXI was on sale at £7,000, whereas Parkers price guide currently has this valued at approximately £4,800!! We did find a Ford Fiesta Zetec which may have just been inside our price range, providing they gave us an extremely generous offer on our part exchange. We decided not to bother asking, but were collared by a group of four salespeople before we were able to leave. They seemed extremely confident that they would be able to make us an affordable deal on the Fiesta so we sat down to wait while they bustled around making phone calls. Some time later a different salesperson returned with a stack of papers and announced that they would only be able to give us £400 for our car (1998 Peugeot 206 - current Parkers part ex value £1,500). He then stated that they would knock £750 off the list price of the Fiesta "as a courtesy". This still left us approximately £1k short of the asking price. When we said as much, the friendliness vanished and we were told to "do us a favour here, I'm trying to help you out". When I pointed out that inflating the prices to ridiculous levels, then offering to knock a few hundred off to try and sweeten the deal is not really helpful to anyone, I was practically shouted at, and told that apparently I know nothing about cars or car sales. It was at this point we got up and walked away.
