Styling, use of space, fuel consumption (CDI), safety.
Terrible ride, faulty like Mercedes SHOULDN'T be, build quality poor.
I bought a 2000 170CDI in 2002 and sold it about 18 months later. I did 30k miles in it. I have owned three other Mercedes, a 190E and two 300TEs. The A Class is proof that Mercedes can't build cheaper cars. The design is fantastic, but the car shakes itself to bits. Rear swing arms, rear spring, front springs, front anti-roll bars joints all either replaced or falling apart in 50k or less. The low profile tyres can't handle the rock hard suspension and vice-versa. The seats are too hard for a ride this hard too. On motorways this is bearable, but country lanes (in the UK) knock your fillings out. I get back ache after 60 miles - and I'm an ergonomist so I should know something about seat position and build! As an alternative Ford Ka - miles better if a harsh ride, but at twice the price? Nope. Shame really, as this is a great concept.
