General Comments
The Crosman 2240 is one of the best pistols out there. It's a single shot, bolt action co2 pistol. In stock form it produces velocities in the 460 fps range. While this may not seem like much, keep in mind that this is in .22 caliber. It is one of the only pistols that are capable of hunting. The greatest thing about this pistol, is that it is one of the most hopped up pistols on the market if not the most, and therefore, there are tons of upgrade parts for it.
I ordered my pistol from the Crosman custom shop with the 10.1 inch .22 barrel for more velocity than the standard 7.5 inch barrel. I didn't want the barrel any longer because I didn't want to compromise the handling of the pistol. If I was to get a shoulder stock, I would have gotten the longer barrel. I also added a black muzzle break on the end to reduce muzzle climb then I added a long steel breech so I could mount a scope. I had plenty of scopes so I decided to order it without a scope. I decided to use a regular rifle scope. I used a bug buster 6x32AO scope. I can hold it steadier than I can with a pistol scope. What can I say, it works for me. For the grips, I ordered it with the Cocobolo Sportsman wood grips. These grips are absolutely beautiful and feel great.
INITIAL SHOOTING
When I received the gun a few weeks latter, I can tell you I was very impressed. I loaded up a co2 cartridge and some RWS Supperpoint pellets and began shooting. The first thing I discovered was how powerful this little pistol was. With the increased barrel length, I estimate the velocity to be around the 500 fps mark. maybe slightly slower. Keep in mind that this is with a .22 caliber pellet. The second thing I noticed was how accurate it was. It kept all it's shots within 1/3 of an inch at ten meters. At 20 yards, it still held a group of less than 2/3 an inch. The trigger is about 5-6 lbs. A tad heavy for my liking for a pistol but it's acceptable.
THE MODS
In my never ending quest for more power and accuracy, I decided to upgrade it. I added a heavier hammer spring and carefully enlarged the transfer port. I enlarged it into an oval because I could make it larger without widening it to much and can flow more gas easier and cause less restriction around the two 90 degree turns it makes to going into the barrel. It now can make these turns more easily and has less restriction. I then proceeded to re-crown the barrel. I'm not going to go into this right now because there are to many steps to go into as this review is about the gun. It is very easy and doesn't require complex tools. The information on how to crown a barrel is on the Crosman forum. When done right it can seriously improve accuracy. After re-assembling everything together, I proceeded to shoot some groups. The velocity was now in the well into the 500 fps range. It now uses more gas but I really don't consider that a disadvantage given the power. I also swapped out the trigger spring for a lighter one and the trigger pull is now down to about 3 lbs. The groups have improved since the re-crown also. It now shoots almost one hole groups at ten yards and 20 yard groups are about 1/2 of an inch when rested in sandbags. I could put a 2250 reservoir tube and a biohazard valve but I'll save that for when I get a custom 2250 with a 24 inch barrel and camo stock.
HUNTING
This pistol in stock form has enough power for light bodied game like starlings and sparrows. With the longer barrel and mods I've done, it now has enough power to cleanly down a rabbit within 25 yards with a head shot. I use pointed pellets to make the max out of the available power this gun has for thick bodied game like rabbits and squirrels. For feathery game like starlings, sparrows, pigeons, and blackbirds, I use RWS super H hollow points to avoid over penetration . The thin fragile hollow point cup performs well and explosively, even at these low velocities and drops pest birds in their tracks.
CONCLUSION
Overall, this is probably the best pistol on the market for modifying and given the right mods, is perfect for hunting at short range. It's cheap, extremely accurate, very beautiful with the Cocobolo Sportsman wood grips, and very upgradeable. I think this is probably the best co2 pistol made. it's certainly my favorite.
