General Comments
I had read some reviews of this book and looked forward to the 'laugh a page' one reviewer had mentioned. It was a 50-50 split between laughs and yawns for me.
The writing is candid, punctuated with swear words and gritty insights that help to acclimatise you with his perspective. Vernon God Little tugs you into his rotting chaos, creating apprehension in the reader rather than empathy, as the mystery plot leaves you tracing every detail of sentence for a piece of insight. When you realise that all you're getting is location and witty remarks, the book starts to lose it's appeal. With a vague storyline and some hefty lumps of main character struggle, which is basically what the story is about, I got a bit fed up with it and wanted something more interesting to do. I did finally finish the book, but it was hugely disappointing. Instantly forgettable.
