Martin Waite's review of Halo 3

“Please try and ignore all the hype about HALO 3. ”

★★★☆☆

written by Martin Waite on 05/10/2007

Good Points
Great graphics (Hi-Def)
Surround sound
Co-op

Bad Points
Very limited shelf life. Dedicated Halo fans will complete this game in a couple of hours; for those of us who are casual users, 9 - 10 hours.
Not enough levels to justify the price.

General Comments
Please try and ignore all the hype about HALO 3.

I loved the first Halo game (PC). It had loads to do, and each map made you think about your next path, which door to enter, where do I locate extra ammo et al. The game was full of surprise, and looked and played superbly well. 9/10

Halo 2 (XBOX) Didn’t like it, couldn’t get into the game, struggled to find anything worth saying good about it other than the co-operative mode, which allowed you and a mate to share the same map mission. 3/10

HALO 3 (XBOX 360) - I am as guilty as the next man, and I believed the hype - Halo 3 would be a game to beat all games, nothing will come close to it, spectacular...

Well, for 9 hours it was. What?! Only 9 hours you say, you must be one of those computer freaks, sitting up all night in some mad HALO 3 frenzy...

No not at all. I bought the game for my 10 year old and me to play, have fun and spent weeks, if not months attacking each level with anticipation, as we did in Halo 1.

After spending the hard earned £39 we rushed home, put the game into the machine, switched on the Sony 32” widescreen and surround sound was all set to go. Playing the game in normal mode as I’m not too good with the control pad (mouse and keyboard man).

After watching the boy on single player for 2 hours (having a great time I must say) we left for a break.

Returning from the football field, I allowed him another 2 hours, spread over the rest of the Saturday.

Returning home after Sunday morning under 11’s football, my boy begged for another stint at Halo 3. Again, we both sat and watched him progress through some fantastic Hi-Def maps.

In total from start to finish, it took us 9 hours to complete. I am extremely unhappy that this game didn’t live-up to my expectations, the hype and more.

I think Bungie want to take the trilogy into the online multiplayer world, using the short 6 level single player mode as your teaser to want more online. I have tried the online mode via our gold membership. I can’t see how this will entice my boy away from Lord of the Rings online or Warcraft.

I won’t comment on the storyline or each map contents for obvious reasons - does he live or die :)

Length of time to complete based on an average player: 10 hours

Looking forward to Halo 4: no, not any more.
