Poor mechanical condition of the vehicle and rude staff.
We have hired a vehicle via economycarrentals.com in June this year. We collected Skoda Octavia from Split via their local agent called H&M car rentals. For extra peace of mind, we paid an extra insurance costs at the office in Split and paid to cross over border in Bosnia and Montenegro. When we received the vehicle we were at first very happy with it. It was comfortable and suitable for our needs.
We had a very pleasant journey along the Dalmatian coast from Split to Dubrovnik where we stayed for a few days. We then decided to cross over to Bosnia with the same car and visited some friends in Sarajevo. We originally hired the vehicle for 8 days. On our 5th day of the journey, on Sunday evening at 2200hrs, the vehicle started making horrible noise in the rear. The noise was very similar to a metal scratching a concrete or asphalt on the road. We thought that a part from the bottom of the vehicle might have got disconnected and is scratching the road and had immediately got out of the vehicle to look. There was nothing that we could see at the bottom of the vehicle but the rear wheels of the vehicle were so hot, no one could touch them. Also the lights of the vehicle were malfunctioning. None of the travellers were mechanical experts and we did not know what was wrong with the car. As I was pregnant at the time and the vehicle was not in driveable condition, we decided to call the company and ask for help.
When we telephoned the company, we were told to leave the vehicle where it was and that they will supply another vehicle for us in the morning. It was late rainy Sunday evening and we had to walk some distance to the taxi firm, paid for taxi and returned to our place of stay. We were angry about all of this but hoped that the matter would be resolved promptly.
On Monday morning we received another call from H&M rentals saying that they do not have a local office in the town where we broke down but that they will arrange with the local agent to supply us another vehicle. They then called us back to say that they hired a vehicle for us via Europcar which we needed to collect. We took another taxi to the car rental office and were given a small hatchback rather than saloon vehicle that we originally hired but did not complain as were happy to have any functioning mode of transport at the time.
We were told that we would not be charged for the replacement vehicle.
We originally agreed to pay 192 pounds for the rental of 8 days which they charged on our credit card in June. In July we received another credit card statement with another charge of 216 pounds from H&M rent a car. We never authorised this charge and were not invoiced for it. We had no idea what it was for, so we queried it with the credit card company who agreed to charge it back to the H&M car rentals.
H&M rentals are now disputing the charge back by saying that charge was for the replacement vehicle (2 1/2 days of it) and for their costs of travelling from Zagreb to Sarajevo. They charged us more for the replacement vehicle hire for two days which they said we would not have to pay than the hire we originally paid for 8 days.
They are also stating that the vehicle was fit to drive when we decided to abandon it.
I do not think that I have ever encountered such poor trading standards and customer service in my whole life. We had such a lovely holiday in Croatia but this company has really spoilt it for us. We are angry and disappointed. We think we may need to take them to court, if they still continue to argue their right for the charge. We consider their proceedings as theft and would never recommend them to anyone.
