General Comments
It's time to have an updated review on this hotel. We had read some reviews before leaving on our holiday and it left us wondering a little if we had made a mistake in booking this hotel - my husband and I were both delighted to find it a friendly well run hotel. It's location is in the old town of Paphos which is 2 miles from all the bars and restaurants. No problem if you don't mind lots of walking!
Rooms are spacious, we had a seaview, which I would recommend booking as the alternative is the balcony overlooking a busy street with a view of shops and apartments. Plenty of storage space and bathroom adequate. When we arrived we it was very hot and humid, so the AC was on all the time with all doors closed. We did find the hallway on the third floor from our room to the lift to be very warm in the early evening. The maid was friendly and efficient, towels changed every day, bed linen every 3rd day. TV with three English news channels and one channel with movies/documentaries in English, although we were watching a movie that was interrupted before the end by a football match!
Pools/Sunbeds: The hotel's terrace for sunbathing is not that big, and the sun doesn't get round to most of the beds until 11am. There are plenty of sunbeds, however, they are placed close to each other because space is a premium. Pools: both the large pool and the kiddies pool are both very clean.
Breakfast was the same every day. Only difference was scrambled eggs and boiled eggs alternating. Previous reviews I read are correct about it being a bit of a scrum, but this is purely caused by everyone wanting breakfast between 9am and 9.30am - and the toaster and hot drinks being situated together. I think if they moved the toaster that would solve a lot of the congestion in this one area, but that's a suggestion to be put to the hotel. I think the choice of 4 different cereals, three types of bread, cake, fruit, cheese, cold meat and of course bacon, sausage, egg and beans, along with three types of juice, tea, coffee, etc is plenty of choice for most people.
Didn't have lunch at all in the hotel. I did have afternoon tea and was served a lovely piece of chocolate cake.
Dinner service was a bit more formal, we thought the food was fine, we particularly loved the salads and fruit and their carvery night I can highly recommend. The gammon is to die for and I love their potatoes! Now whilst I said the fruit was lovely, for me this was all I really liked about the sweets. They served a gateaux or cheesecake and individual bowls of different coloured cold custard or jelly. The twice had rice pudding, that was very nice. By the time I had a big plate of salad for a starter and then a bit of everything on offer for main, I wasn't looking for too much more anyway.
Entertainment was a DJ twice weekly and a singer on Sunday. So 4 of the 7 nights there was no entertainment and only one small bar nearby, so after 7pm you need to get a taxi to Kato Paphos, which costs £5CY (£6GBP). So given the location of the hotel, they could do better on the entertainment side?
Location, now I think this is the biggest problem for a lot of people, it's 2 miles for the main tourist part or Kato Paphos, which is where you find bar street, the harbour with all the fish restaurants and all the shops (souvenir, jewellery, leather etc). As I said above its £5CY each way in a taxi or £0.70CY on the bus, but the but service stops at 7pm (ish) so after that time you can only travel by taxi or it's a bit of a walk. Now we enjoyed the walking (comfortable shoes a must). On a plus the old town has all the non-tourist shops and the Market just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Marks and Spencer, Mothercare, are just next door to the hotel. If you like shops, especially shoe shops, this is where you'll find them. We didn't find any bargains though. Only some table linen, which we bought for Christmas Day. Every thing else we bought because we liked it, not because it was cheap! We liked the location, no ticket touts here, and no loud music at night must be a plus. I think it suits middle aged to older couples the most.
Places I'd like to give a special mention to are:
Phukhet Chinese & thai Restaurant, Tomb of the Kings Road
Very nice food and lovely restaurant, staff all dressed traditionally, service first class.
Colosseum Italian & Steakhouse, 101 Danaes Street
We went for the Elton John Tribute by Andrew Oliver. If you are an Elton John fan, you are in for a real treat. Andrew Oliver has put a lot of effort into his act and is definately worth seeing. He also appears at other venues during the week but twice weekly here. We both had steak and this was first class.
Tea for Two (one a few doors up from the hotel, the other on the Tomb of the Kings Road)
Lovely pot of tea in a china pot with china cups and saucers. They serve english type food, in particular a very nice cheese omelette which comes with salad, chips and a warm roll.
Outback Bar - Tomb of the Kings Road
Wonderful Sunday Roast (both Sundays!) beef just melts in the mouth.
To sum up, we had a great holiday and this 3 star hotel lives up to it's stars - don't confuse it with a 4 star, it is a 3 star!
