Friendly staff, rapid and friendly Auckland check in, window seat arranged even though all window seats were taken when we booked.
A little bit cramped for a tall person - but probably no different from any other economy class seat. Food not too brilliant for a 9 hour day time flight - which is effectively the whole day. For only the second time in many years, the flight was late leaving Auckland - but better safe than sorry. No individual screens on a 737. Radio options are not as god as they used to be. I miss the old Goon Shows on the comedy channel - which has disappeared, and the jazz channel generally overlooks my preferred traditional jazz altogether.
Staff from Air New Zealand as always, were fine, but this was our first long economy class flight for ages, having travelled business class to and from the UK several times with Air NZ on 747s in recent years, and had great flights. When even Air Tahiti/Nuie's small aircraft have individual screens, it was a bit of a shock to find that we didn't have that luxury.
As my wife is a scared flier, there are very few airlines she would trust, and in spite of the slight discomfort and food that isn't a patch on the Auckland/LA/London flights, she is happy knowing that the aircraft safety record is second to none (they have only ever lost one aircraft) and that alone means that she will fly with them. For myself, I have to suffer with the knowledge that my height is a distinct disadvantage on some aircraft, so getting comfortable in any aircraft seat (including business class is just) about impossible if sleep is the intention. A bad back and a fused neck don't help and the seating is not designed for tall people.
Check in was extremely quick, now that they have one general queue with several check in staff on duty, rather than specific desks for each flight. Very efficient and friendly check in staff.
Air New Zealand is a small airline by world standards and it is inevitable for a host of reasons, that some travellers have a bad experience. We have flown regularly domestically, short and long international flights, economy and business class, many times over the last 20 or so years, and overall, we rate the airline highly, but the 747 flights have always been the most enjoyable. The flight staff and NZ based staff have always been excellent. Only two flights in all that time have departed NZ late. This just happened to be one of them.
