It's a new magical world and while we want everything to be magical, Katie isn't, which makes her all the more special and relatable to us, the readers. She's spunky and has all the problems single women have and more, with an evil wizard out to obliterate her work place. Or at least, compete with it.
Bad Points
In the fan fiction world, she's what we'd call a Mary Sue, probably 100% but pretty much near it. She's needed by everybody, loved by the people that matter and so far has many many romantic prospects in her midst. It's annoying, unrealistic but is probably the fairy tale I guess most women (probably the target market) would read.
General Comments
One particular pet peeve of mine was when the character (book's written in a first person narrative) is when upon seeing a prophet dressed in "next season's clothing" or what she would imagine it to be, the outfit wasn't described. Perhaps to make the book seem a more viable read in the future? Or she simply doesn't know but would want to appear to know?
