BenBaker29's Review of Newbery Zeus SPS Cricket Bat

Overall Rating

Good Points

I'll leave the general comment bit for ma ramblings and quickly list the pro's and con's.
Excellent manufacturing quality (my 3lb model, has a lighter pick-up than my mate's 2lb 10 powerbow).
Middle as big as your head.
The amount of wood in it, the size of the middle, the light pick-up and the fact it's a Newbery means when you hit the ball, you really HIT the ball.
£160 for the SPS with no hammer edge treatment, that's not a lot for grade 1+ wood.

Bad Points

Standard grip is a bit pathetic, but if your like me you'll have your own personal grip combination on all your bats.
Obviously, its a Newbery, so the wood is very soft and as the avid cricket enthusiast will know they are prone to breaking and mine did, severely large cracks appeared at the very bottom of the face of the bat.
Having said that, Newbery fixed it for free and even put a new hammer edge face on it for me and re-did my grips, so 10/10 for aftersales service.

General Comments

The hammer edge treatment is a must on the Newbery Zeus SPS, unfortunately it does cost £25 but it will extend the life of your bat no end, this does include pre-knocking in. While Newbery will tell you this means you'll only have to knock it in yourself for an hour or 2, I would personally advise at least 4 hours knocking in.
