Good Points

Located just off the A66, the Old School is ideally located for access to to the Northern Lakes. It has a 5* rating and is only a few miles from Penrith train station.

Bad Points

A car is essential for getting around. Although there is a sitting room, it is only for the use of the proprietors. In the Lakes, where the weather is often rainy, this is not ideal.

General Comments

The 5* rating was presumably given due to the quality of the fixtures and fittings, however the place lacks any warmth. I did not feel comfortable there. A couple who were there at the same time asked to pay by cheque, under their card guarantee limit. The response was, I'm not going to the bank today, can you pay by switch.

It says a lot that while many similar facilities nearby had no availability, this places was not fully booked at any time.

Having stayed at the Old School 3 times and at the proprietors previous establishment numerous times i feel that i can comment.
I have always received a warm welcome from the staff, the way in which I pay has never been a concern or a problem. They have provided a service and i pay for that in which ever way suits both of us.
The location is good for the lakes, penrith and keswick and within 5 minutes of junction 40 of the M6.
The rooms are excellent, I would recommend the blue room (double) which has a big bathroom and looks out over paulines well kept garden. The red room, a double, is also a good size and well equipt. They also have a single room, the name or colour of which I am not sure.
Best I can say is try it out, 5 stars and entry into the michelin guide isn't handed out for free, they have earned it.
