Bertiie69.'s Review of JVC AV28WTS Widescreen TV
24th Jul 2003
Overall Rating
- Value for money

When it was working everything about this set was very good.
Bad Points
Unfortunatley it has only lasted 17 months and JVC have been no help at all.Last time I buy JVC.
General Comments
As I said,I liked everything about this set but it went into zoom mode on it's own and stuck there.
It has been in for repair for 4 weeks now but I am told by JVC that they have NEVER come across this problem before and it can't be fixed.
Sorry but I cant afford to throw away £500 ON A TV every 17 months.

on 4th Sep 2003OK, maybe I was a bit harsh but I stick by what I said.Yes it was out of warranty by 7 months and I did stick my hand in my pocket to the tune of £100.
The result was the television was no nearer to being fixed so I had to call it a day.
Remember JVC built this television and not one of there tech people new what was causing the problem, all I could do was wait as they changed part after part until it became uneconomical to continue.
In my eyes it doesn't matter how good a product is if dosen't last a reasonable amount of time.Rich
on 5th Sep 2003Sorry mate, I think I was a bit harsh too - I know where you are coming from. Re-reading your msg, you did say that you tried to fix the TV, but that it was a no can do. I s'pose what else CAN you do in the circumstances???
It seems unusual that they can't fix it though. Daft question, but does that mean that they don't know what is wrong with it? (Or that they don't know HOW to fix it)
I got a different JVC 28" recently (no probs so far touch wood!) - Extended warranties ARE available - products only come with 12 mths warranty as new by law. But I usually consider extended warranties to be bad value for money (3 yr extended warranty on coffee maker costing £46 is £24!!!)
I do suggest that you don't let the matter drop with JVC just yet though - take it up with Customer Services. It may be out of warranty, but nobody wants to think thir TV is going to pack in 13 mths from new - and don't expect JVC to roll over for you though - you know what it's like... Good luckBertie69
on 11th Dec 2003UPDATE:Eventually I did get a replacment,the current model being:AV28GT1S-lasted 4 months.
See my review on this site and convince me that JVC ARE QUALITY!
I have been told over recent months that JVC are not the company they once were and are using cheap components in there products.Rich
on 15th Dec 2003That's good news then! The silver lining to the cloud. My JVC TV still works fine and I'm very happy with it if anyone is interested...

on 9th Jan 2004Its a fact that under EU law(one of the only good things about the EU) items have to be fit for purpose. Which in this context for defects, is 5years, on some items it is longer. You can certainly go to Trading Standards in your local Town and get the exact wording and write to a company's Cust Service and if they refuse to respond positively then threaten to sue in the County Court. Its easy peasey to do and they WILL cave in before that. Lets face it, £500 is not to be sneezed at.
Its not in manufacturers interest to publicise this but there is plenty of info on the Web and either Trading Standards and Citizens Advice to confirm itRich
on 11th Jan 2004Have you got more details on the EU law regarding this please!??!?

on 12th Jan 2004Its a bit confusing in that a new law has just been introduced which puts the onus on the retailer to address and issues. Its not as comprehensive as was the original intention. It still gives the consumer the right to take a retailer to task if, for instance, a TV becomes a right off after only 18 months. This is clearly not fit for purpose but it appears to be a bit vague on proof. Although it has shifted the "blame" to the retailer/manufacturer to prove otherwise. At this point I am only going by articles I have read in the press and magazines. I can only suggest asking Trading Standards offices for detailed info. My impression is that it wll still be difficult to pursue a case and you will still need persistence and determination but the law has been improved. At the end of the day a Judge will need to make the first decision under the law to set a precedent. I would have thought that in the case of a TV becoming unrepairable after 18 months would be a simpler justification for "not fit for purpose" than say an intermittant fault that occurs after the warranty. Of course it is still the case that if a fault occurs on that basis during and after warranty the law generally views it as the same fault and therefore still for the retailer to fix. I had this very debate with Dixons a few months ago with a faulty Sky box and in the end they accepted that it had been an ongoing fault and swapped the box several months after the warranty had run out.
Sadly, you have to make nuisance of yourself. Running naked through your local Dixons shouting that they are crud seems to work........kasmir on 23rd Sep 2004
I add to same problem with JVC 56 inch HDTV
It was bought in November 2003 3 week later broke nothing dead screen call tech support they send a techki with a new Processor for my TV, fix the problem 1 week later TV blow again call back JVC and after 23month of negociation with the engi and techki of JVC they send a new KIT ( new Inside KIT) arround 2000$ can. Techki comes and changes the part. Tv was working for 3 week and blow again Call back and complaint on JVC and they answer me that is not their problem if the TV was still dead at this time. So now after 10 month and 3000$ can for the tv I still do not have TV in Living room and the JVC rep shoot me I alone with this they dont want to change the part or replace for a new or refund me. and I Still have 2year and 2 month of warranty on it. Now I contact a laywer and I will meet JVC CANADA in court to have my money back.
So my personal opinion is stay away FROM JVC.

Have a problem describing this JVC AV28R25EKS tv. When we bought this set it was after being very disappointed with a new Phillips 32"6506, the result was that at first it seemed that it was...

It is most unfair that you give 0/10 in the circumstances, for what is clearly a good television. (You say so yourself)
Is the television not still under warranty? If not, then you know the score. Car breaks down out of warranty, you REPAIR it. And it costs you money. Fact of life. Get used to it. Put your money in yor pocket and pay and have it repaired.
Don't use the opportunity to slag the JVC brand as a whole off. It is VERY hard to respect your review here.
