I agree. Akita's need careful handling, but this applies to all dogs - they are animals after all, and owners should be aware of their capabilities. Having said this, I have had my Akita for nine years. He is a big, strong handsome boy. I've had no problems with him around children or other dogs in general. He lives alongside a Rottweiler, Staff/Lurcher, and a German Shepherd. He is the alpha male, and he has clashed with the Staff/Lurcher when the Rottweiler has been in season. At all other times they are the best of friends, and they do everything together. ALL dogs need careful rearing, discipline and everyday handling - owner ignorance is behind many of the attacks we read about. If a dog is raised in a loving but disciplined way, I feel that you will have created a loyal and faithful friend in your dog. Never be too confident, too trusting or irresponsible with any dog around children or other animals - this rule does not just apply to this breed. Always see the parents, always buy from a registered breeder and make sure you can handle a large dog! They may look like teddy bears, but they are incredibly strong & wilful sometimes, so firm handling and training is essential early on.
