General Comments

We bought the Flymo Power Compact 400 lawn mower in 2000, as we moved into a house with a bigger lawn, where the old 30 cm wide lawn mower was getting a bit tedious. The PC 400 seemed powerful, and looked different from all the other lawnmowers. Pricewise it was more like a premium electric mower...

Within the first year we had all sorts of problems with breaking switches, increasing vibrations, handles falling off, and the mower would not like cutting high or wet / damp grass.

The warranty ran out on labour after one year, when a major overhaul would have been needed. I was advised by a service guy in an independent garden centre to try and get it going to the end of the 3 year parts warranty, and have it replaced completely, which I did.

In the third spring the motor bearing seized.

The garden centre was not actually selling Flymo's because of the poor reliability and build quality, but they had agreed to do warranty services for Flymo. Their assessment of my PC 400 was that almost every part would have to be replaced, which meant getting a new mower was the easiest.
So Flymo gave me a new mower after 3 years. This one was the 1700 W model, rather than the 1600 W I had on the old one.

The design was slightly different, but there was no real improvement. All the same problems repeated at about the same time intervals until 3.5 years down the line ... the motor bearing broke, which means that in 6.5 years I have had 2 Flymo lawn mowers die on me.

I have not abused the mowers. They only had to cut my lawn every other week when it was high enough, but that must have been too much!!!
