Good Points

Near the beach, near local bus routes, friendly staff, ambience of the place, policed well so little rowdiness, homely atmosphere.

Bad Points

Near the main road, needs a lick of paint, internet out of order, My Travel.

General Comments

The Esmeralda Apartments are a delight, expecting the worst and got the best! While arriving by coach and seeing all the newish hotels with boring, no style/personality apartments (the type that features in "Grand Design" expecting a paradise home and ending up with a house that looks like a hotel), we arrived at a little gem! Must have been one of the first hotels built and was greeted with wood panelling in the reception and a pleasant smile. The room was good(2 bed) but not a lot in it and in need of a few new things (e.g. sink basin stem was cracked), but new curtains and real wood furniture. The toilet did need fixing but that was fixed on the day. Forget the "welcome meeting" with the local rep its just a hard sell for money. Take the local buses, every 10 minutes, you cannot get lost it's just one road to Salu (€1.25 each). In Salu there is the train to Barcelona (€11) and a busy beach. Trains at the back of hotel are a bit noisy but not to early and often. You soon get used to them, the same with the main road at front. The hotel could do some thing about this by putting a row of trees or boards up at the pool to stop people looking in. The beach is just 30 seconds away and it is sweeped clean every morning. The beach is quiet and not crowded. It's close enough to pack up after a few hours to come back have a drink for a bit, and then back out to the lifeguarded blue ribboned beach. The outside of the hotel needs a lick of paint but not too bad. It has stone arched windows but look out for the gargoyles at the front. Entertainment was average, Elvis was rubbish, Buddy good, karaoke was karaoke (if you like that sort of thing) but you could always go to Salu for the fountains lite up at night. Food at hotel was chips, food at local restaurants was chips but all a O.K. prices. Be careful though, not all take credit cards and the one bank with ATM runs out on Sunday. Two adults and two children with drinks was about €40. Taxi's are about and not to much more, to Salu for about €8. Another point: you do need a deposit at arriving of €50 or £30. The good points outweigh the bad, looking forward to returning to Cambrils and the Esmeralda Apartments.
