I headed to the Wheatsheaf Inn in Onneley for a family meal, not knowing what to expect, having not even visited the area. On first impressions the pub seemed very nice - relaxed atmosphere, good ales, country cottagey feel. As it was a Sunday there was a set meal, which included three very basic starters and a choice of lamb or beef from the carvery. Now the website boasts that all of their food is 'home reared produce, and is cooked freshly on the very same day', so you'd expect something of a high standard - this was not the case. The leek and potato soup starter was more like potato soup; it was as if someone had forgot to put in the rest of the ingredients and might as well have been made from flour and water, as it had about as much taste. The famous 'carvery' was little more than two joints of meat, some soggy veg and a selection of very bland potatoes, which, for some apparent reason had to be handed out in rations by the very apologetic member of staff, who made it clear that it was only his second time carving meat. The piece de resistance however, had to be the ginger & digestive desert special (or some words to that effect); this literally was the ingredients sandwiched between two biscuits straight from the packet.
Needless to say, the food on the whole was very average. However, the surroundings were rather nice - the pub is situated within a country village, but was in easy reach of the motorway. I did of course manage to put away all three courses (just to make sure), and the relaxed atmosphere meant a good time was had by all. I just won't be going again.
