Long recording time (commonly 3hrs on one tape with a change of battery).
Robust.
Reliable.
Not too small.
Bad Points
Very little in regards to family use.
A bit big to transport about i.e. you can't just slip it into your pocket and forget it (but I don't like using the very small cameras).

Sony TRV78E Video-8 analogue video camera (Hi8)
Zoom lens
Bought this thing five or six years ago so it's getting very long in the tooth now, but still going strong. I've recorded about 45-55 3hour tapes through it so it must have done at least double the mileage of that if you include playback (recording onto DVD for convenience).
Yes, I know, I'm averaging almost a three hour tape a month. Hey, I've got young kids and it's my memories of them for when I get old and they become teenagers.
In fact I only seem to use it in spurts through the year.
Well, the good new is that I've used it for six years and it's still going strong except for the eyepiece monitor which seems to have a damaged cable due to bending it back and forth (opening and closing it) so it now only operates when in the fully open position, no problems as the main monitor is the thing I use the most.
Everything else is fine. Recording and playback quality is all you'd expect from a Hi8 machine.
More to follow... See the comment, got to go now.

30 May 2009 - Back again for an update. Had this camera since early 2001, so it's a bit of a dinosaur now, but it's still going strong. I'm surprised it's not worn out by now as it's had a fair amount of use recording then playing back.
Nearly all my tapes have been transferred to DVD. This camera was an excellent purchase.
What can I say, it's going strong, but I think I'll use up the last of the tapes I have [ I only use the tapes once] then retire the camera and think about purchasing a hard drive camera as a replacement.
This Sony was an excellent purchase.
