Galland's review of Citroen C8 Exclusive 2.2 Hdi

“I have a love-hate relationship with my Citroen C8. On...”

★★☆☆☆

Good Points
Driving comfort and ease. Powerful responsive turbo diesel belies the size and weight of the vehicle. You quickly forget that you are driving a diesel. It gives a great ride and I arrive fresh after long journeys. Very well equipped and extremely practical vehicle. I love the side sliding doors which allows loading of the vehicle in narrow spaces, something I have to do all the time at home. Rear seats are removable, or can be towed down one side, very good idea! Exceptional fuel economy for a vehicle of this size, regularly returning close to 40mpg average.

Bad Points
Unreliability - Where to begin? In over 35 years of driving as part of my job, this is the most unreliable vehicle I have ever known (by a country mile). By far the greatest number of faults come from the fact that Citroen appear not to "do" electricity! There have been so many electrical faults on this vehicle I do not have space to list them, but doors that don't close, sunroofs that won't open, mirrors that won't unfold, air conditioning that refused to work etc, etc ad nauseum. Then there is the forest of transient and intermittent warning lights. Here today, gone tomorrow. The alarm! It goes off if next doors purrs too loudly it fur the wrong way, so I disable it. Very useful, an alarm you fear to leave switched on. I have had to call the AA out 3 times in 2.5 years, one for a broken pulley, once for a faulty fuel gauge that indicated plenty of fuel when in fact the tank was empty, and last week when a gear box selector cable broke.
Then there is the cost of spares and service, which is quite high.

General Comments
I have a love-hate relationship with my Citroen C8. On the one hand it was the most practical and refined large MPV on the market when I bought it. On the other hand I do not feel that I can rely on it.

It seems Citroen had a really good idea but then failed to implement it well.

Not good enough Citroen!
