Easy to use. 'Ethical banking'
Exorbitant charges. Late / No reply to mails. Unhelpful.
I moved my long term Barclays bank to smile because I was concerned about what my money was being used for, and was sucked in by the happy glossy ads. I have had nothing but issues with them. I was asked to pay back an agreed 1000 overdraft on one of my accounts within 28 days (just after Christmas) for no reason just that they felt like it. I had to grovel and was made to feel like Oliver to get a payment plan to pay it off. Happy Christmas me!
Then, forgetting a direct debit after Christmas my account went over a few pounds which snowballed (purely through their charges being placed randomly over my account without notice) to over £100.
Understandably miffed about this, I have reclaimed my money back (but have now been charged £25 for going 12p overdrawn for a day. I'll get that back as well) but they are miserable to deal with. Points of interest:
- I was overdrawn a few pence (though their charges) 2 days before pay day. I have a standing order of £900 to go in that account which fell on the Saturday. While my standing order was delayed until after the weekend I was still being charged two more days overdraft fee. How does that happen? No money could go in?
- (this is a doozy this is) So desperate were they to charge me a fee for being overdrawn they neglected to realise that there was actually a plus sign on my account and charged me £20 for being £400 IN CREDIT. When I pointed this out to them (after 3 emails and no reply and a wait of about three weeks) do you think I received an instant apology? An immediate refund with interest? Some other incentive for the outrageous act? No. This is the reply verbatim.
"I've checked your details and am also, like yourself, struggling a little to see where the account was over its limit. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and have refunded the charges as a gesture of goodwill. These will show on your statement from tomorrow.
Please ensure that the account is run within its limits in future to avoid similar charges. "
'struggling a little' 'benefit of the doubt' 'gesture of goodwill'? Its a bank statement, not texas hold-em. You can imagine my response. Funny enough. I never got a reply.
I'm getting a large sum of money soon and I can't wait to go somewhere else. What a huge disappointment.
