Good Points

The food is very good, with generous sized portions.
Great location, with fantastic views of the castle from the mezzanine level.
Modern decor with contemporary style.
The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed.

Bad Points

It would seems that the only thing letting the 'Outsider' down is the service - which impacts the overall experience for me.

I have eaten there twice. The first time I had a table up in the mezzanine level with beautiful views of the lit up castle. The food was good, and the waiter very friendly.

Because of this experience, I chose to take my fiance there for his birthday, and I had a totally different experience altogether. We had to wait to be seated, although we had booked our table way in advance.

There was no apology or explanation for the delay, and when we finally did get seated, the waitress took down my fiance's order wrong.

It seemed the waitress expected him to eat the 'seabass' which had been ordered for him, and when he refused, he was told that it would take approx 20 minutes for his meal to arrive, and my meal was taken back to the kitchen to be kept hot. In the meantime, we snacked on a bowl of garlicky fries which should have accompanied our main meals.

The manager did come over the apologise for the mistake and offered us a free dessert. When the waitress came to clear our plates she rudely asked if we wanted our desserts, and did we want one each? I ordered one each just to test if she would get the order right this time. Alas, she came back with the wrong flavoured ice cream, but at this point I was too tired to make a fuss!

My only advice to the management would be to make sure that they train their staff and maybe give them a lesson in people skills. It would be a fantastic restaurant if the service was better!

I would recommend The Outsider restaurant in Edinburgh to a friend because of the value for money, but don't expect to have the best experience of your life!
