General Comments

I've had the Yamaha SR125 a couple of months now after picking it up from a dealer just outside London. It was ticketed at £499 and came mechanically sound, a little dirty with a few months tax and MOT. The previous owner had also supplied a Haynes manual, revealing a lot of important maintenance the bike requires. The petrol was on reserve and after taking it to a garage (fill up only on normal unleaded, she doesn't like Super apparently) and it cost £7.60. I had to ride her back 45 miles to get her home so the original ride was a good test on the bike. I found the gears and clutch easy on the wrist and feet, and the front disc brake and back drum responsive enough. The riding position is comfortable but I did feel a little like I was being pushed to the front of the seat sometimes. I didn't manage to get full throttle but did get to see the beginnings of 65mph which the bike seems fairly happy at. The country lanes I use at the minute don't allow me enough time to safely test top speeds. When reaching higher speeds, you feel in control and the bike is fairly happy to do them. One of the drawbacks is that she does like a lot cleaning and lubrication, especially on the chain. A six monthly oil change is a good idea as well as monthly checking of tire pressure, as with most spoked bikes. The engines metal can corrode due to weather wear so cleaning and a roof over it's head at night are a good idea. The bike has an electric start which is very reliable as well as a choke for the colder mornings which, if required, only needs to come about halfway out. There are plenty of places for individual tuning, the brake height can be adjusted as well as preferred clutch bite and brake tightness. The controls are a little old fashioned, if not looked after, can become stiff. There is no petrol gauge but the tank is easily opened to check petrol amounts. Speedo is reliable, but neutral light can come on when clutch is pulled so you can be unsure of being in gear or neutral if not a seasoned rider. This type of bike has been around since the late eighties so many parts are cheaply available. Newer models do not have much changed, especially mechanically, so support should be obtained quite easily.

For a reliable but cheap bike, this 125 will be around the top of the list for as long as they keep making them. Treat it with the care and attention it craves and it'll pay you back no end. Definately recommended.
