Spotlessly clean rooms and public areas around hotel.
Nice rooftop pool / sunbathing area.
Friendliness and helpfulness of all the staff.
Quieter area than in the main Bugibba resort if you don't want it to be too noisy.
Breakfast was advertised as continental but they had hot English dishes every morning, which you didn't have to pay extra for as is the case in some hotels. Good selection though not your usual English type bacon and sausages etc.
Shower was just an attachment over the bath, not fixed to wall.
Sometimes there was a bad drain smell when the water went down the plughole.
We booked into the Crown Hotel over the internet and then found some reviews on another website. Some of these weren't very complimentary so we were apprehensive about going here. We needn't have been. I agree that in Malta 4 star is not necessarily what you would find for the same rating in Tenerife or Spain but the 4 star rating ensured that air conditioning was available in all the rooms and a rooftop swimming pool, which some of the small hotels do not have.
We only booked bed and breakfast because we didn't want to be tied to rushing back for an evening meal. However, we did choose to dine in the restaurant on three nights. There wasn't a great deal of choice but we thought it was good value for money, only 4 Maltese pounds for a three course meal in pleasant surroundings. We found that there was ample choice at breakfast time, hot dishes as well as Continental, fresh fruit and lovely fresh bread, however the fruit juice I think was cordial not fresh fruit juice.
The hotel is situated in a back street, behind the larger San Pawl hotel and I should imagine that in high season there may be some noise from this hotel, so you would be advised to ask for a quiet room. The hotel is located at the quieter end of St Paul's Bay, about a 10 minute walk from the bus terminus in Bugibba. There is a bus stop just a couple of minutes away, on the main road, and here you could catch a bus to Valletta or hop on a bus to take you to the terminus, from where you can catch a bus to anywhere on the island. St Paul's is a good resort for catching buses to see other places, don't miss going on one of these!
Our room was situated on the third floor towards the back of the building, on the side of the hotel. There was a veranda, which ran in front of four or five rooms including ours, which was quite nice, it overlooked a shady courtyard.
On the downside, there was a strong smell of engine oil near the lifts, which was a bit off putting until you got used to it.
However we really enjoyed our stay here and felt that, though not luxurious, it was very comfortable and good value for money. We would not hesitate to book there again.
