Good Points

Very good fuel economy especially over lengthy trips, very responsive at higher speeds, feels very solid around corners and over speed bumps. General looks of the car are conservative, yet classy especially in black so the plastic bumper strips won't be offensive. Seats are made for comfort and sits 5 people comfortably - it doesn't really like quick cornering. Boot space sufficient and practical. Low in insurance (group 6) and road tax (CO2 of 140 G/KM).

Bad Points

At lower revs the motor is not very responsive (feels nervous when in neutral or when accelerating from standstill up a hill), support of the driver and passenger seats aren't great - no lumbar support, no radio controls on steering wheel which is a little bit of a pain as the regular controls are out of reach. Wind noise at higher speed is an irritation I have to live with.

General Comments

I do generally love the Volkswagen Golf 1.9 S TDI. It looks pretty sweet and the car loves to be driven. It's just in the city (especially around London) that the car will protest and feels out of place. It's simply not build for stop-and-go driving. In it's most standard trim it's not the most sexy car to drive, and changing the interior and exterior is costly - so if it is a matter of concern when buying a car, make sure you get the slightly more extensive trim. In conclusion, it's a reliable and classy car with great fuel economy and low maintenance cost - but it's very conservative in styling and not meant for stop and go driving.
