I purchased my .22 Cometa 300S (silencer/carbine) for £130 and was immediately impressed with the rifles overall quality.
The ambidextrous stock is made from a very attractive piece of Beech covered with a warm, deep, satin finish and pleasant grain, and very comfortable to hold. The quality of the wood is very high and a QD stud for my removable bipod is still firmly in place, without the need for glue etc, after considerable abuse.
The short barrel and fixed moderator give the rifle good balance, and the moderator gives a nice comfortable grip when cocking.
The barrel has a diameter of 14.7mm and can make finding a barrel clamp for QD swivels difficult. Although I found that a 16mm barrel clamp clamped tightly over a short length of heat shrink tubing works very well, and protects the deep and quality bluing on the barrel.
The Moderator (can't really call it a silencer on a springer) looks like it might be a push on fit type, but despite removing the grub screws I've not been able to remove it, but does give the rifle a very nice, deep, powerful sound, as well as giving the rifle a very purposeful look.
The rifle, when matched with the right pellets, such as Crosman Accupels or Air Arms Diablo Field Domed, will happily give single hole grouping out to 30+ yards, but don't bother with Bisley Pest Control. I personally recommend the Air Arms as, although slightly more expensive, they are very consistent with the Cometa and are heavy enough for hunting with. A quick point of interest is that during a 'Quigley' sitting 75 yards target shoot; I was able to get a consistent 8" grouping within about 20 shots, only beaten by a very skilled youngster with an expensive .177 PCP. My mate with a .22 SMK XS36-2 spent around 80 rounds to get 5 shots with a foot!
The gun isn't light, especially when combined with a heavy single piece scope mount on large 50mm scope, but when compared to similarly priced SMK Chinese rifles, it's a feather weight.
Initially, I found when using cheap scope mounts (for a cheap scope) I did notice an amount of scope creep over a few hundred shots, which would require re-zeroing when moved back into place, but a better set of mounts (for my better scope) with an arrestor screw has cured this, as would a good single piece scope mount. There is also a degree of barrel droop which has required the packing out of the rear of the scope, but this is not huge and a few layers of film negatives works a treat for this.
I've not yet chronographed the Cometa, but the consistency at 30+ yards suggest that it is close to the stated full power and delivers this with a confident regularity. This makes the Cometa a capable hunting weapon for rabbits etc at 25 yards, especially when sitting or prone (I find the weight can make aiming tricky when standing).
Overall, when compared to other rifles of this price, the Cometa is a bargain. It is a very capable rifle, perfect for beginners, and compared to the top of the range Chinese SMKs, it's a dream, and well worth the extra few quid.
