General Comments
First of all I have a confession to make - I am addicted to chocolate. I am not a purist, and I love all chocolate from the own brand stuff to best brands; from Thornton's to hand made Belgian chocolate. I just love the smell, the taste, the texture. I do of course have a few favourites, and Galaxy Ripple is one of them.
A little information about Galaxy:
Galaxy is a company owned by Masterfoods, the same company that owns Mars. That is not to say that Galaxy tastes like Mars chocolate, because it doesn't! (I've just noticed they've both got "spacey" names).
The Masterfoods factory is based in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.
Mars started life when Frank Mars and his wife Ethel started selling butter cream candies from their kitchen in Tacoma Washington in 1911. After 9 years they began making a malted milk bar coated in chocolate that could be enjoyed anywhere, and they called it the Milky Way bar, (another space reference). After a while, caramel and other things got added to the basic Milky Way bar, and the Mars bar was born. They quickly expanded their lines, and Mr Mars invented M&M because he wanted little bits of chocolate that didn't melt as soon as you took them out of the packet. From there the Mars empire grew.
At some point in its history, Mars has been bought up by Masterfoods, and they now produce cat food, (Pedigree and Whiskas). Pre-packaged food, (Uncle Bens); Vending machines, (Klix), as well as their chocolate empire.
I wonder what Frank and Ethel would think of it all?
To describe the taste of a Galaxy ripple is a difficult task. Obviously it tastes of delicious Galaxy chocolate, but if you've never tried any, that won't help you much. The taste of Galaxy chocolate is sweeter than other chocolate, and more rich and creamy and fantastically chocolatey. Some people may find the chocolate too sweet, and I certainly know a few people who don't like it at all. The texture of Galaxy chocolate in general is very smooth, and it melts quickly and beautifully in the mouth, coating the whole inside of your mouth. Some people may find this texture a little cloying, but I love it.
A Galaxy Ripple, (as the name suggests) has ripples. These ripples are similar in effect to a Cadbury's flake, but they are more melty, (I'm sorry; I know that isn't a real word), and much less crumbly and flaky.
The smell of Galaxy is delicious, it really makes my mouth water.
The wrapper is recognisable as Galaxy, and features their somewhat inspired brown and cream colour scheme and swirly pattern. I have never been a fan of their packaging, but I still think the old style wrapper was better. It seemed more classy and luxurious. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking!
The bars are 40g in weight and cost from 28p, (if you are lucky), to around 50p. You can get multi-packs from supermarkets and some convenience stores, and these work out slightly cheaper.
All in all, I love Galaxy Ripples, and I would recommend them to anyone with a very sweet tooth, or if you are in need of chocolate therapy.
