Chris.'s Review of Metallica, St. Anger
7th Jul 2003
Overall Rating
- Value for money

slight return to form after the quite terrible 'Load' and 'Re-load'. Lars has finally remembered why he has 2 kick drums sitting in front of him.
Bad Points
elements of the production suck, it's certainly no 'Master of puppets'. Lars sadly forgot to operate the strainer on his snare drum.
General Comments
On first listen i hated it. plain and simple. But it has grown on me. It's still not on a par with any of the late 80's era material (or maybe it's my rose tinted glasses). But it makes 'Load' and 'Re-load' look like the 90% rubbish they were. ('Hero of the day' and 'Mama said' excepted). One area that i think needs work is the production. Admittedly i'm not a fan of the 'Raw, unproduced' school of production. But the drums sound as if they were recorded, not in another room, but in another county! But the vocals sound good, and the guitars are passable. On the whole, i was expecting something worse than what i got. So for that at least, i'm grateful.

on 10th May 2004Mmmmmm......You know nothing. 'Load' and 'Reload' are dire. You're in a minority of 1 on that score I'm afraid. Go out and buy 'Master of Puppets' and '..And justice for all' and listen to 'em.. a lot. Then throw your copies of 'Load' and 'Reload' into the bin. Actually you'd better burn 'em, just incase someone else finds 'em.

There is no way that you can slag off load or reload. Its the ime when they started working as a band to produce a song rather than a wall of guitar popularised in the 80's.
