Fair trigger, top-notch metalwork
Heavy, large. very hold sensitive, twangy
There's really no good reason to avoid the RWS34. It's reliable, well made, and backed by a decent warranty. But it just doesn't have that much to recommend it, either.
The appearance of the rifle does not disappoint. The metalwork and machining are excellent, the woodwork a notch below that. The sights are simple but robust (non-fiberoptic).
It's a bit on the heavy side and surprisingly hard to cock given the power level (a little lower than something like a Gamo Shadow or a Crosman Quest). The firing cycle isn't terribly impressive... the trigger is more positive than a Gamo but a little stiffer than I'd like, and the gun does buzz and twang when fired. This last trait is not unlike a Gamo, but perhaps not quite as bad.
The worst part, however, is the sensitivity of this gun. First, it does have a tendency to loosen its stock screws... and I found that if they back out even a little, the POI shifts several inches at 60 yards (my standard plinking range). Locktite will mitigate this tendency. But (at least on my example) the shooter has to be extremely conscious of the way he's jolding the rifle... it has to be held loosely, and it seems that the slightest alteration in the shooter's hold will shift the POI rather dramatically.
Certainly, this can be seen as a desirable trait - after all, it does help instill shooting discipline. And for that reason, it has some virtue as a target rifle. But if you're inclined to go hunting with your air gun, this can be a real detriment... as it's easy to get distracted from your "perfect hold" during a hunt, and possibly wind up with a wound rather than a kill.
For its weight and cocking effort, velocity is a little disappointing... about 870 with Crosman Premier 7.9's.
Overall, there are other rifles that are more pleasant to shoot than this one. RWS's model 48 is one outstanding example....
