Good product ICSA certified.
Good pass rate at VirusBulletin.
Free to non-profit home user.
Free version uses cheap update server.
Scheduled scan choice limited.
No support from Grisoft.
AVG is a sound anti-virus product produced by Grisoft a company part owned by Intel. It offers a slightly cut down version of the Pro product, free to non-profit home users, it offers good real time cover and e-mail scan. It has however lost some of the features available in the pro version and while the coverage is unaffected, some of the changes made can be inconvenient, for example the scan scheduler is reduced to either a full scan every day, which is overkill, or nothing. This effectively means most people will need to remember to run a regular manual scan. In addition to this the update signatures are hosted on a cheaper server than the pro version, which is fair enough, but as a consequence at high demand periods this can slow the update process significantly and as some of the update files are rather large this can be a pain, particularly for users still on a dial-up connection. Broadband users will find this less of an issue.
In my opinion it's a very good option that provides perfectly adequate protection for a lot of people and I'm quite happy to recommend it, but the inferior update system and the lack of any support from Grisoft make it somewhat lesser than its avast! Home free competitor.
