Good Points

Compact with excellent buttons. Mine still works after more than 8 years of heavy use and regular abuse.

Bad Points

Only for calls and SMS. When the phone is closed and a call is received the caller ID can't be seen.

General Comments

I have had my Motorola V50 since 1999. It still works perfectly despite having had constant use, very heavy for three years, got very wet lots of times including salt water, was left in a forest for a month, used as a toy by children for a week (they scraped all the finish off the case inside and out and drew all over it in permanent marker) and subjected to a lot of impacts including falling off bridges and out of trees. For over a year it was used as a voice recorder during research in rainforests. It must have travelled over quarter of a million miles in total. When I first got it my girlfriend was dubious and said it would break within months. The opening mechanism does feel a bit flimsy, but mine must have been flicked open tens of thousands of times and it's still intact. Amazingly the screen is hardly scratched at all and the battery will still hold power for a day or an hour of calling. I now keep a foreign sim card in it and it is mainly used for texting, but it still functions perfectly. I've subsequently had variants on the V50 clamshell design up to the V3 Razr and they have inevitably disappointed me (terrible cameras, awkward buttons) and eventually failed me (usually display failures following impacts). The V50 is incredibly light and compact, much more so than any of its successors and consequently it's easy to loose. The V50 is easily the best phone I have ever had, but obviously they weren't all made to the same standard!!
