Exceptional mechanical reliability if serviced regularly and driven correctly. Price is far below any competitors, practicality in work use is great, enjoyable vehicle to drive in city or highway driving.
Considering the low cost of Express vans compared to competitors I cannot find any fault other than modest fuel economy (average 7.5km/l city and highway) - though no box-shape van bodies ever offer any better fuel economy (including Hiaces).
My 1991 SWB 5-speed manual 2.0L carby Express worked enormously hard and drove faultlessly in both intense city traffic and highway trips (usually with heavy to over-loads) for 420,000km before the engine died. The original engine never blew a head gasket, never used coolant, and only used oil moderately even by the end of its life. Tyre and brake usage was phenomenally low once correctly set and serviced. On the strength of this performance I have recently replaced this van with a 2005 SWB 2.0L EFI 5-speed manual Express which carries a 5-year Mitsubishi new car warranty that transfers to me (as the car's second owner), is presented beautifully inside and out, powers along like a rocket, and offers significant fuel economy improvements on the 1991 carby van - the 2005 EFI model so far averaging around 9.2km/l city and highway.
