Nissan Almera SRi is the best! It's only 40 BHP less then GTi but with engine being 1.6 instead of 2.0 it weighs less and also cheaper to insure and tax. Mine also has GTi interior as standard. On a drag race (if you can call these cars suitable for drag races) it outperforms the Honda Civic 1.6 VTi. Space in the back, I'd say as much as a Mercedes-Benz SL 600. Boot is good enough for two decent size suitcases. Top speed I got out of mine is 115 mph.
It has some weak points on the body, wheel arches and door sills particularly. If you have GTi interior, you will have problems with baby seats, as it has bucket seats.

Mine is 1996 (N reg), black, 92k on the clock, perfect condition and now guess the price...... £825!!! For pleasure like that it's a bargain!
