Cheap for starters and beginners.
Unbelievably bad customer service. Anything more than a basic package and you're asking for serious trouble when your business matures.
Slow solutions - telephone support is based in the Philippines (you only get that if you go for a higher value package), and it is just as useless as their email customer support.
1and1's 'Webstatistics' is so unreliable that it's better to forget it exists. Other 'additional' features, e.g. Google sitemaps, search marketing, SimpleSEO and others are freely available on the internet, and they are nothing special. 1and1 really know how to oversell. Their 99.99% up-time guarantee is not really a guarantee, because if your site is not up for whatever reason, you don't get any kind of compensation.
After having had various teething problems when I initially joined 1and1 web hosting, everything seemed to be fine until the end of last month, when all my web space was moved to an 'auxiliary' server, because apparently I was using too much bandwidth or was over some quota.
The fact that I've never once come close to using the available bandwidth (20Gb per month), and I use only 3% of my file allocations and 60% of the available space, the same argument is being put forward again and again as an excuse to disallow access to my website!! No-one can browse, the front page is a half loaded mess, registrations are down and orders are non-existent this week.
So a thriving business has been put into serious jeopardy, unless I 'upgrade to a managed server' at £49.99 per month (I was told by a supervisor that I must upgrade in order to regain access)!!
I've already lost thousands in sales (based on data extending back 2 years), and there is no sign of a solution from 1and1, other than to upgrade to something costing me 3 times more, that I don't even need.
My advice to anyone looking for a solution; use 1and1 to start off and then move hosts as soon as you need anything more than a basic package.
