Good Points

Excellent service provided from the second we stepped onto Egyptian soil. Discover Egypt staff very well organised and efficient. The food was very good and safe to eat, hygiene regulations strictly adhered to (including the requirement for all diners to use alcohol gel before entering the dining room), cabin crew and all staff on board Viking III a complete pleasure. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, at times amusing, and very open to discuss Egyptology and life in Egypt in general. Tipping system was worked out for us, so we only made two payments via our guides in the week, and they sorted everything out. Very highly recommended holiday.

Bad Points

Cabin could have done with a little tarting up, but was very clean and well-serviced during our stay.

General Comments

We paid £399 for the 7 night cruise, and thought it was a bargain. You need to be aware that there are extra costs once in Egypt, in particular tips (about £30 plus what you want to give to the guide) and the cost of the extra excursions if you want to do them. You can pay for almost anything in sterling or Egyptian money. We took the trip to the Nubian village, including camel ride (a real eye-opener), Abu Simbel (a very early start by coach but, my oh my, was it worth it), and sound and light at Karnak (not very inspiring but OK). It is useful to have a pocket full of English pound coins, as many of the traders will accept them and you can pick up real bargains this way (eg 5 necklaces for £1 sterling). We had real fun bargaining and there were never any bad feelings when we could not agree a deal. Every now and again a trader will ask you to act as a banker for them and exchange 5 x £1 coins for an Egyptian note. We did this a couple of times without problem. I frequently wore a large scarf like a Hijab, wrapped around my head and covering my shoulders (I am female by the way) and found the traders a lot less pushy when I did this. Wow - I'd love to go back again.
