Golfboy1971's Review of Magicbox IMP Radio

Overall Rating

4.5 stars

Good Points

Easy to use
Looks good
Enables the playing of "listen now" and "on demand" services from radio stations that offer it, such as Radio 1.
Good quality sound, especially when piped into a home Hi-Fi unit.
Back light display, that can also be dimmed to suit your requirements
Supports WPA encryption, that many other units don't!
10 presets! Handy.

Bad Points

Although the unit supports a wifi access point that doesn't broadcast the "SID", you need the SID to be broadcast when you first setup the unit, or whenever you power it on after having it switched off at the mains. You can manually enter the wifi network name, or scan automatically, but in either case the SID needs to be visible during this phase... it can be turned off afterwards to maintain security.

General Comments

The Magicbox IMP is a great little unit, was easy to setup (bearing the above points in mind). I got it up and running in minutes and even my girlfriend, who is a techno-phobe can use it.
Sound is excellent when played through a home Hi-Fi, but not bad via it's own speaker.
Contrary to other reports I've seen, the back-lit display brightness can be altered. You can choose a brightness setting for "active" mode (when it's on and running), "inactive" mode (when it's running but you haven't touched a button for a few seconds) and "standby" mode (when it's off).
