General Comments
Double Glazing and Conservatory undertakings can be a very risky business if you choose the wrong Company to install what can be an expensive job in order to improve your property, which, after all, is the most expensive thing you will probably ever have!
Last year we decided to extend our home by having a Conservatory/Sun Lounge constructed at the rear of our house. We called in a total of four different Companies, two were way too expensive, one was far too pushy and we thought we had decided on one company until the A G S Representative arrived. A G S were the last to come and give us a price. And what a bargain price we got! The difference between the most expensive Conservatory and the cheapest was £12,000!!!!! So it certainly pays to shop around.
A G S are based in Newton Abbot, Devon so if you live much further afield, you are out of luck I'm afraid! They have been around since 1974 so are a very well established firm. They serve Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.
So let's begin at the beginning.
The sales Rep arrived on time, very polite and smartly dressed. He was not at all pushy and noticed we had a few A G S windows already, from several years ago. We had a chat and told him what we wanted, he briefly told us about the Company, showed us a large folder of letters from very satisfied customers (very impressive letters I might add!)
He then went on to measure up. After doing this he said he would go and work out some figures and phone us the following Monday (This was on a Thursday). We explained there was another Company who had given us a good price but there was a time limit on the offer, so asked if there was any possibility he could let us have the figures before the deadline which was Monday. He promised to let us have those figures as soon as possible. We were left with some paperwork to read. The man must have worked on those figures as soon as he arrived home that evening as he telephoned us the next day with a price we could not refuse! He explained they were doing a half price offer on bases which is why the price was lower than the others. We were amazed, as the Conservatory we wanted was quite large, 6m x 2.5m.
We didn't really have to talk it over, I called him straight back and said YES PLEASE!
We paid the deposit and had to wait about six to eight weeks for works to commence. As promised, a letter arrived giving us the dates their teams would be arriving, first to build the base and second to construct the top.
The Building team of two arrived on time and started work. Very pleasant men they were. They had the difficult job of digging out the foundations, building the dwarf wall and finishing the floor. They were very efficient, worked through all weathers and got the job done well. That took almost a week in total, the weather was terrible but they carried on as best they could and finished what was a difficult job giving our situation on top of a hill! The garden slants downwards.
Another portion of the final bill was paid.
We then had to wait another week to allow the base to settle. The construction team of two men arrived, again on time and worked for a few more days to complete the top. Again, very pleasant people, very efficient who battled the wind and rain, still managing to do an excellent job. Another portion of the bill was paid. We could pay the rest on full completion when we were sure we were happy with the job.
The next phase was to plaster the inside, the original building team returned and completed the plastering. In the meantime we had our own electrician in to wire the Conservatory. The plastering concealed all the wiring and we had a very professional finish.
The next phase was the skirting boards. Now we decided to tile the floor, so asked if they could hold off the skirtings until the floor was completely dried out in order to give a better finished job. This also gave us time to paint the walls. They were quite happy to do this. This took several weeks by the time the floor was completely dry, and the tiles were laid. I called the office and told them we were ready for the skirtings. A date was given and once again, absolutely reliable, back came another team of two men to finish the job. We made our final payment for the completed job which of course we were happy with!
From start to finish, the quote was given to us at the end of August 2006. Work for the base commenced in October 2006. The top went on around the beginning of November 2006. The plastering was done in November 2006. We called them back to finish the skirtings having waited for the floor to dry out, have it tiled, paint the walls etc in January 2007. We furnished it in February 2007 as we had to order the furniture we wanted. So now in March we are enjoying the spring sunshine in our beautiful new Conservatory.
Now, we have an impressive sun lounge on the rear of our property, professionally built, beautifully decorated and furnished with taste. This has given us more space and added thousands to the property's value. We are absolutely delighted with it. I would fully recommend A G S to anyone here in the Westcountry and we will never look elsewhere again for any future works needed.
Their catch phrase is "Say Yes To A G S!" We are very glad we did!
Any problems and I have every confidence this Company will never let us down. Every member of staff we dealt with oozed efficiency and were always extremely pleasant. Many of them had worked for A G S Home Improvements for years. From the Company Rep to the Office girls, from the building team to the construction team. They left everything clean and tidy, the windows sparkled and the work is outstanding! And guaranteed for ten years!
So now I am off to make a mug of coffee, sit in my Sun Lounge while the sun is shining, and enjoy!
