Good Points

Just got back! Had the most fantastic cruise holiday ever on the Viking III sailing down the Nile! Egyptologist/tour guide was very knowledgeable and helpful, seemed to appear from nowhere just when you needed him to. He never stopped smiling and we felt in safe hands. The crew were all charming, towel sculptures were something to behold, we photographed them all. Hygiene was of a very high standard, with hand wash in all the rooms and outside the dining room. The food was great and there was loads of it, including afternoon tea and cake. Everything ran like clockwork and we were very impressed. We liked the fact that the boat was not a large one, as most people got to know each other. Everyone joined in the evening activities and we had a fantastic galibaya (Egyptian toga) party, which everyone joined in.

Bad Points

The only thing you should be aware of is that although the communal areas on the boat are in good condition, the cabins had seen better days but let's face it, the communal areas are where you spend most of your time when on the boat. The cabins were however scrupulously clean, it's just that they could do with a bit of a face lift. As we merely used ours to sleep in this wasn't really a problem!

General Comments

I would highly recommend Discover Egypt and the Viking company. You are looked after from the moment you get off the plane until the moment you check through security. The optional tours are worth doing if you have the energy and the trip to Abu Simbel was worth the very early start! A ride on a camel through some desert to visit a Nubian village was the highlight of the trip, you get a good 25 minutes, it's quite safe and well worth the cost of £15. There is also a hot air balloon option, which I did on the last morning. It costs £70, which includes refreshments on the motor launch across to the west bank, transport to the launch site, an hour long flight, dancing with the ground crew when we landed, a certificate and a T-Shirt. We flew near the Temple of Hatshepsut, Valley of the Queens and the Colossi of Memnon and it was quite magical.

All in all, an unforgettable experience. I would certainly do it again in a heartbeat and fully intend to return with Discover Egypt to discover the delights of Cairo and possibly Jordan.
