I have been wanting a decent spring piston rifle for a while yet was a little apprehensive about spending a lot money. I had been eyeballing this lone Winchester 800x .177 spring piston air rifle at a local department for some time. It looked like a nice rifle but I was not willing to fork out $119.00 for it. Last week I noticed it was on clearance and marked at $79 so I decided I would buy it. At the register they knocked off another ten bucks so with tax and a tin of pellets I was out the door for less that $75.
The rifle is made in Turkey imported by Daisy and branded with the Winchester name. It's been getting fairly good reviews as a decent entry-level magnum airgun.
Power - very good with more than enough punch to dispatch typical yard varmints. It easily punches a pellet through a 1/2 inch of pine.
Fit and Finish - What do you expect for a $100 air rifle... It is built like a Russian tank, it ain't pretty, the stock is a bit big and clunky, the welds are rather sloppy, but it is strong with a positive feel.
With the proper pellets it is a tack driver. I found RWS Supermags to have the best accuracy with 10 yard groups under one quarter inch from a rest.
Sights - It has a plastic fiber optic front and a cheesy micro adjustable rear. Both are plastic and sub par. But I plan on putting a good optics on it so these awful sights are not an issue for me.
Trigger - The stock trigger was an abomination, with loads of play, It is supposed to be adjustable but the screw was far to short for any real adjustment. The first thing I did was tear it apart add some nylon bushing to tighten everything up a bit and replace the trigger adjustment screw with a longer one that actually works. The trigger now breaks cleanly at 3.5 lbs.
The bore was clogged with grease and crud, it took a while to get all the filth out but it shoots better than I can now.
If you have the ability to do a bit of tinkering it is a fine rifle for the money.
