Metal construction.
Gas Blowback.
15 Steel BBs magazine capacity.
Realistic PPK/S design/weight.
Good number of shots considering it has Gas Blowback.
Plastic stick magazine.
Ugly CO2 screw.
The Walther PPK/S is my 6th/7th and 8th Air Pistol (Yes I've had 3!). They are all the German made ones.
The 1st one I bought new had a faulty magazine, the pin in the top was missing, and so BBs were coming straight up through the top of the magazine under the mags spring pressure, and then rolling down inside the pistol and jamming up the trigger and the top slide. They just replaced it with a new pistol. The new pistol's mag is still holding together after 1600 shots, but I think the pin has moved slightly so it may be planning on falling out soon.
I found the Walther PPK/S to be my most favourite CO2 air pistol, I have stopped using my others now
as the PPK/S is just so much fun. So much fun that have just bought a second one!! Having and firing one in each hand is very exciting.
Why? The Walther PPK/S has gas blowback, so the top slide moves back and then forwards with each shot.
It does this to recock the hammer so that the gun can be fired semi auto. This rapid movement of the slide back and forth gives the pistol a feel like a real handgun's recoil. On a video camera in slow motion, the pistol moves down and then up after each shot due to the blowback. This pistol is a single
action only.
The PPK/S is all metal, except the grips, CO2 screw, and magazine. The metal makes this pistol quite heavy despite its small size. I don't like the design of the mags at all, they are flimsy plastic, and hold 15 BBs, loading is slow as the mag loading spring must be hold down with one hand as BBs are loaded in manually with other hand. I suspect I'm going to continually have problems with the top pins coming out of the mags, and where I live they aren't cheap at $16 each.
Accuracy is an interesting subject, my first PPK/S couldn't hit anything by looking down sights, it was way off, and I don't believe it can be adjusted for either. The only way to use the pistol was to spray and pray. I'd just fire it and see where it hit and then move pistol around that way. Also the BBs would go all over the place, not consistent while holding it still. But the second one I got was totally accurate, I can aim down sights and repeatedly hit what I'm aiming at, and BBs travel in a consistent pattern.
Why? The first PPK/S serial number is 6C, and 2nd PPK/S is 2F. I don't know what the difference is, but the casts appear different, I can notice differences between the 2 pistols. The manuals are even different. Maybe someone will be able to tell me one day?
As far as gas usage goes both mine are the same. I usually get 90 - 135 shots before the gas pressure in the CO2 powerlet is too low to make the slide cycle back and recock the hammer. At this stage (If you feel the need) you can either pull back the hammer or pull the slide back to recock and fire another shot, but this will need to be repeated until mag is empty.
Destructive power: This pistol is rated at 290 FPS or 90 metres/second. It also ONLY shoots steel BBs.
In the scheme of things, this is quite low power for a BB firing pistol. Most other air pistols that
shoot BBs like Gamo PX-107 or Daisy 693, etc, are rated around 410 - 480 FPS. This lower power is due
to some of the CO2 being used to cycle back the slide (blowback) after each shot. I was a bit worried
about this pistol being fairly useless due to this low power rating for the things I do.
But I was suprised. My 2 PPK/S don't have the power to penetrate a full tin can, but do drill through
aluminium cans, and will smash glass bottles to bits or blow holes through them. And it will keep
doing so until about 75 shots. I have often weighted aluminium cans down with small rock, and
repeatedly shot them until the are almost (literally) in 2 halves. 200 shots to a large apple will
reduce it to apple sauce.
The PPK/S has good safety features, when safety is on the trigger can be pulled and its soft and does
nothing.
Another cool feature is the open port on the right side of the top slide. It allows you to see in to
the top of the mag, start of barrel, and gas valve. And when gas is fresh, a puff of CO2 comes out
when firing. This is very cool. This port also was useful in allowing me to see what was going on with
the faulty magazine I had.
On occasion if the pistol is pointed on a downward angle, after firing, another BB rolls out.
So at this stage I believe the Walther PPK/S to be the best air pistol I have for fun and realism, but
not best for high power or excellent accuracy. I would highly recommend this to others, and recommend
keeping slide, hammer, trigger, CO2 seals well oiled, and only major downside it the poor quality plastic stick magazines.
