GarryF's review of Heinz HP Sauce

“It had to happen - The HP Sauce we all were brought up...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by GarryF on 05/02/2007

Good Points
Still looks like the "Old" HP Sauce in the bottle.

Bad Points
Another "Tradition" bites the dust!

General Comments
It had to happen - The HP Sauce we all were brought up on is no more. Production has shifted to the Netherlands, and proudly claims on the bottle "Packed by H.J Heinz".

It's now in a squeezy bottle, and it has the viscosity to match - just like Heinz squeezy salad cream.

You would wait with anticipation as "HP" the worlds best sauce crept down the inside of the Glass Bottle and finally produced a Big Dollop on your plate. Way too much for a bacon sandwich, but you dipped until it was all gone.

Did you ever run out of HP - and rather than do without - put a few shakes of vinegar into the bottle and give it a good "shake", but what came out was a disappointment?

Welcome to the "NEW HP" Sauce. You can tell me it's still the "Old" recipe Mr Heinz, but it never ran round the rim of your plate before you got to grips with it.

What use is the E.C. if it insists Palma Ham MUST come from Palma, but HP has no home.

It's ASDA own brand for me.

Totally agree that HP sauce has been ruined. The reduced salt issue is not the reason in my view, they have changed (cheapened) the recipe in the move to Belgian production. The texture is wrong, the smell is wrong and it tastes sweet. Where is the old pepper and spice? There are now more HP alternatives in the shops - a jolly good thing. Bye bye HP sauce, the 'Original' was killed of many years ago.

As my last Bottle of Brummy HP Sauce comes to and end- yes I know its best before SEP 08- then my search for a British Made replacement has struck upon an equal. BRANSTON Brown Sauce with Branston Bite. OK - nothing will replace the Brummy HP- but Branston has that something that turns a bacon toastie into a feast. Give it a try. £1 in Asda.

I agree! HP Sauce is best served from a glass bottle. That congealed gunk that formed around the bottle top (ahh - the memories); it takes me back!
