General Comments
On 3rd January 2007 I went about £8 over my £100 o/d limit for literally a couple of hours (i paid some money in the same morning). For this, I was charged £35 - debited from my account the same day with no notification, sending me £33 over the limit. I received some days later a rude and condescending letter accusing me of 'misusing my account'. On another occasion I was charged £15 and £25 for going slightly overdrawn - again, I received my salary that same day so it cannot have been for more than a few hours. OK I admit that I technically had an unauthorized overdraft but both occasions were certainly for less than a day and that does not justify the excessive charges. Also, the bank instructed that my card be retained last year - it was swallowed by an ATM - even though my account was in credit!!! It transpired that because I had been out of the country for some months and left the account overdrawn (but WITHIN the agreed limit) they deemed it necessary to 'confiscate' my card. It took me about ten days to get a replacement.
The Cooperative Bank is frankly poor. It clearly survives on its 'ethical' ticket but when it comes to what it should actually do ie. be a bank - if fails miserably. The customer service is poor, the website is anachronistic and frequently inaccurate, there are hardly any branches. I would not only not recommend it, I would actively steer people away from it.
