Good Points
It is light, and quiet. Excellent fuel economy.
Bad Points
Plastic oil splash system does not hold up in temperature extremes. Connecting rod is NOT made of hardened steel, nor connecting rod bolts. Oil drain through oil filler makes it impossible to completely remove particulates from wear from pan. Pull rope wears very quickly. Oil capacity of 1/2 quart contributes to high oil temps in extreme environments resulting in loss of viscosity and premature wear and stretching of piston rod. No control over local dealers, nor adequate background checks of same.
General Comments
This is my 2nd Honda EU2000. I live in the high desert of Utah. -20 winter +115 in summer. First unit blew up in 90 days after rod stretched, and took out head. Before engine loss, oil shut-off switch failed. Pull cord failed. Honda okayed repair under warranty after some bickering, but dealer went out of business, and unit was lost. Its was used to power motor home, and misc.
Bought my 2nd EU2000 roughly 10 months ago, same environment, but use limited to supplement solar system maybe an hour a day. It died from same problem after 10 months of use. I change oil religiously, but the Honda dealer I bought this one from online states there is foreign material in crankcase, the oil splash system is broken, rod stretched and was near blowing. States due to material in crankcase, no warranty. I asked for evaluation of material to determine source, and still await some kind of response. A small engine mechanic advised me of engine oil capacity, the soft rod material and problems with getting contaminants from crankcase when changing oil. I have not heard from Honda as of yet either. Warning: these units are for limited light use only, in moderate climates. Just a note - I've had a Honda Magna motorcycle for almost 20 years, and it doesn't even use oil.

My first Honda EU2000 generator died shortly after the plastic oil splasher failed. It had about 12,000 hours on it. My second EU2000 died shortly after the plastic oil splasher failed. It had about 5200 hours on it. I've had it repaired twice by Honda under warranty, but it sure looks to me like severe engine damage occurs when the oil splasher fails, and these puppies are not designed to be rebuilt. It gets up to about 120F where I live, and down to about 20, so I guess that's pretty severe weather for me too. Anyone know if the flywheel shaft on other Honda engines (CG135 perhaps) is the same as the alternator shaft on the EU2000 (which is supposedly a GX100, but I thought the GX was an OHV and the EU2000 engine is an OHC with a plastic cam)? I'm thinking of making a Frankenstein type monster out of it. For $900 I expected a rebuildable engine.
