General Comments

The faithful nova. One of the original old skool modifing car for those on a budget.

I bought a Vauxhall nova 1.4SR around two months ago.

I thought the car was a heap and after being involved in an accident where my mates nova was written off i swore never to buy one. However here i am now eating my own words.

I bought the Nova with completley standard exterior but with some modifications under the bonnet.

The Nova as it stands has the following modifications.

Exterior:
Completly standard with exception of flush tailgate.

Interior:
Completly standard with exception of a few extra dials. (Voltmeter and oil pressure)

Engine:
1400 Vauxhall block
Weber twin choke carb
K&N air filter
Full Magnex 2&1/4" exhaust system (not sure bout manifold)
Petrol Filter
Performance ignition leads

Suspension:
Front: 28Point top adjustable spax shocks & springs
Rear: 15Point adjustable spax shocks and springs
Lowered by about 40mm all round

Brakes:
Front upgraded to Wilwood 4 pot dynalite calipers with drilled and vented discs
Rear converted to cavalier GSi discs and calipers

Wheels:
15inch Alloys with spacers machined to allow clearance of front brake calipers.

As you can tell from above the car has been fairly modified. It should be noted that the car is a wolf in lambs clothing.

My best mates own Saxo VTR's which are heavely modified under the bonnet and to their dismay they cannot out perform my Nova. (viva le francais no more boys). Last night i had to ferry around a mate who was having his saxo serviced when we met an XR2i at the lights. He began to laugh at the concept of racing my nova but let me say words cannot describe the looks of embarresment he showed as he watched by tail lights disapear infront of him.

I also have some furthur plans to get the most out of my 1400cc lump. A kent cam kit is soon to be installed and a new twin exit exhaust and maniflod is to be fitted soon and a bonnet vent directly over my carb to allow the intake of colder air.

After doing the above i am going to source the ultimate, a calibra turbo lump to drop in because after seeing one at Ace Cafe i know its the car for me.

So anyway those of you looking for a cheap hot hatch do not under estimate the power of Nova. Those of you XR2i & VTR boys be carefull how hard you laugh.

theres no way dat ur nova 1.4sr could do an xr2 off the lights. he odviously wernt even bothering 2 waste his petrol on u! dont matter wot u do 2 a nova its still mutten dressed as lamb.if u want speed u should try and upgrade 2 a corsa sri or gsi b4 ur nova falls apart!

  2. Larry. on 3rd Jul 2003

I can put you in touch with a mate of mine i see at ace cafe every last wednesday of the month. He drives a corsa GSi and he cant believe how fast my nova is. My nova must have been injected with a lethal dose of steroids when comming off the production line. My mechanic rates my nova as one of the fastest SR's he has seen!!!!! And he drives a Mk1 xr2i with a rs turbo cam which cannot get away from me :-)

  3. pj. on 7th Jul 2003

£2k of mods in a £40 car ~ wise purchase!
Now go & buy a real car

  4. Rob. on 18th Jul 2003

Pj Novas are class, and if they are dun up well they look ace, total respect to anyone out there who has got a nova and has dun it up, because you took the time to do it up and the money. I myself have a nissan micra K10 the square frnt 1 and hav modified that, i know it sounds really stupid and i bet you think it will look it aswel, but trust me it doesn't it looks ace, and puts out a few BHP aswell. I prefer buying old cars and modifying them, its more of a challenge and more fun, trying to find the parts etc!!!!!

  5. delkingdom. on 19th Jul 2003

my nova has a full stainless steel magnex exhaust system k&n induction kit skimmed head unit carbon jets and is a 1200cc i paid £300 for it and it beats my m8s ferrari 360 modena. xr2s aint got nuffin on novas they look nasty fall apart and are tacky. if your gonna have a fiesta you should go for the zetec s pukka...

  6. Richy_Boy. on 21st Jul 2003

The official 0-60 time of a 1.4 SR is 12 seconds, maybe 11 on a good day. The XR2i is around 9. You have about 74-80bhp, and the XR2i had 102ish. His car was destroyed mate. Also I'm not sure a turbo cam will work in a carbed car...? Should have a different profile!

SR does not stand for SPORT.. for a deal blast I'd advise you get something along the lines of a 1.6 / 1.9 205.. or if you're brave enough a nissan 200sx. ;)

  7. Dan. on 24th Jul 2003

There is no way u beat an XR2 unless it was a wreck,i owned a 1200cc nova that would do 60 in 2nd n could outpace most SR/Sri's n i couldnt get ne where near an XR2 even though my Nova would do 0-60mph in 12 seconds (just quicker than an SRi).

  8. Larry. on 25th Jul 2003

Sorry ladies you kept sayin 11 seconds this 12 seconds that. The fact of the matter is your looking up standard bhp. Its not just bhp, my car has a wole load of torque. I can sit on the back of an xr3i rs turbo runing at 7psi for most of race away from the line.

The xr2i was being driven by my mechanic who i went to school with. The fact of the matter is you lads in your xr2i are now shrinking, shrivelling up at the concept of a 1.4SR doin wat u thought only a similar car cud do.

Dont argue guys im only stating the facts. My car sits on the back of xr2i's is just as quick as a modded VTR and has a whole lotta fun with RS Turbos.

  9. Dan. on 26th Jul 2003

There is no such car as an Xr3i RS turbo, they are 2 seperate cars, which one do u mean, dont say RS turbo cos then i will laugh (lots).

  10. Larry. on 27th Jul 2003

Its the Xr3i shape escort converted to an RS

  11. paulo. on 28th Jul 2003

i have the same car a 1.4 sr and i have what i presume is the same carb this lads put on 32/34 dtml as thats the only weber thatl bolt straight on as a replacement. the original carb spec on the 1.4sr is a peiburg 2e3 and there pants. By changing to the weber and a high lift cam mine is rolling roaded at 105 bhp which is pretty similair to the gte or gsi novas which will get to 60 in around 9 flat. So if u look at that then there shouldnt be much difference between nova with said mods and an xr2. Ive never raced 1 tho so i cudnt tell ya if i could keep up or not. Twin weber 40s will make them leave any fiesta though as my mate had 1 and it was unreal. only got bout 15 mpg tho lol.

  12. Larrymurphy02 on 21st Aug 2003

The nova i wrote the review on is now for sale!!!! Read the spec and queries on this web page :- >>> http://213.239.45.197/~nostalgicpuk/forums/index.php?showtopic=145

Larry, no offence babe but really??? As the owner of a xr2i 1.8 16v i have to say in responce to the "eat my tail-lights" comment ... DREAM ON!!! Not now Not ever NO WAY!

  15. partyguy on 20th Oct 2003

as the owner of a nova gsi, id say it wld mess over any one!its got full magnex exhaust system, lowered by 50mm, got 15" venoms kand n 57i induction kit, heads been skimmed and got new carbon injectors!lets put it this way itd give rs turbos and astra gtes a run 4 their money!xr2is get urselves a car that aint out of fashion!

  16. stevesri Rank: Lance Corporal on 2nd Dec 2003

my bro has a nova 1.7td, running 24psi boost, uprated fuelling etc. dropped 60mm on gsi shocks and that thing absolutly whoops xr2i's, keeps all over the back of std rs turbos, fiesta rs 1800i's and whoops xr3i's. also has nova and corsa gsi's, cav sri's etc.
    xr2i boys dream on!
this is also coming from me and i am big into my fords and own a xr3i cabrio on twin 40mm carbs, cammed up and ported and polished head, with full stainless and 4 branch manifold. he wastes me!

  17. nickssss Rank: Lance Corporal on 2nd Dec 2003

Look u xr2i losers Iv got 1.6 GTE converted to 2.0 16v and I have to say its an absolute animal. Just the other day I won two people crusin in rs turbos and I have no trouble smokin up xr2's, 5 gtt's cav's calibras etc so don't give me that rubbish that novas arn't very good. Best Novas are MK1's. 13SR's rule. Also I attented a track day at silverstone and a nova 2.0 turbo smoked up a sierra cosworth. Pictures are on the internet. Long live the VAUXHALL NOVA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Bye Bye GTi Rank: Lance Corporal on 3rd Dec 2003

Hi i have a Nova Gsi with stainless exhaust and K&N air filter, i have released the air intake valve, allowing more air into the engine aswell as increasing the fueling, i have also removed the wedge in the throttle and replaced the nylon bushing. I would estimate the car to be doing 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds. GSi's are much quicker than XR2's (1.6 8 valve) but fall short of XR2's (1.8 16 valve) as much as i hate to admit it (and i am doing something about it).

  19. villers Rank: Lance Corporal on 29th Dec 2003

isnt an engine conversion a lot of money to spend in order to make your nova go fast? the guy in the review said that they turn into dust in an accident so why on earth would you want your nova to go quicker???? ive heard the 2.0 conversion is impressive but cant get my head round why?

  20. emmalee on 10th Jan 2004

Come on boys take a ride in my corsa sri, and then lets watch the grin factor meter kick in,it makes me smile and thats only natural because i'm a 22year old female racer who eats all you dreamers on the road,my spec 14sri 8valve with 57i induction kit, piper cam and fse boost valve running at 4 and half bar, splitfire plugs and leads,
fuel chip re-mapped 4 branch manifold with the cat tossed in the bin ending with a nice tune out of a 4inch bore,so forget the body work get started on your engines lads.

  21. villers Rank: Lance Corporal on 12th Jan 2004

Emmalee, thats an awful lot of work on a 1.4. Ive got a 2.0 16v ibiza with a piperx and a magnex. Im also from cumbria and would be interested just how fast a corsa can get with a few quid spent on it. What do you reckon your power is now from what it was?

  22. emmalee on 13th Jan 2004

Hello Villers, and readers, Well what can I say, Except, That the Corsa SRI is a great car. I have spent over £2,000 in Engine mods as well as little bits and bobs, and I recon (not proven, on a rolling road) That my Corsa has got about 125-130 BHP. Considering that it only had about 90 BHP standard, this car can move quickly, with having an FSE boost valve fitted this takes my fuel in a bigger way,w hich benifits the overall revs top end, but can and has damaged spark plugs,if theres more fuel in the cylinders (so my boyfriend tells me) its going to generate more heat in the head, this is where the 4 branch manifold comes in. The standard one cracked due to the heat, and there is room for improvment on fitting a stronger head in the future?
After the mods had run in,(the cam) I noticed a really great difference in overall proformance.
I would recommend a Corsa SRI to anyone, all the works cheep to do, well my boyfriend has done some of the work, except the cam and chip, which was fitted by Collins Proformance. I know theres lots of respectful 16valve owners like your self villers and other readers, which I respect and are very worthy of there mods indeedy, I concentrated on my insurance payments when my driving started with various small cars, fiestas fiat uno and panda, and my sadly missed Astra 1.3s,which gave me a good no claims, and my insurance is very reasonable now, and I guess im just happy that I can spend money on my car, which once upon a time I used to spend on my insurance, and every performance car driver knows what a kick in the teeth that is when your under 25 years of age, thanks for reading and take care of yourselves, its a jungle out there.
    all the best,Emmalee

  23. dtmpallant on 10th Feb 2004

Hi, just to add my 2 pence worth. Vauxhalls are quite quick, I think fords have more power but are heavier. So there may not be that much difference between them with regard to "at the wheels" power per tonne. If you talking about racing off the line, you have to take into account driver reaction , condition of the road etc. However id like to see you race a standard CRX Vtec - 163Bhp. It took a nova with over £4000 spent on the engine (1600 block, race cam, throttle bodies) to keep up with a standard 155 BHP civic VTi - lesson to all. if your going to build fast car (any 1.6 that will do 140 MPH is worth a look) - start with a fast one in the fast place. i wouldn't bother tuning anything less that a 1600 because you can't muster the torque to match and all that power you spent your wages on

  24. dunketh Rank: Lance Corporal on 14th Feb 2004

This whole comment thread has me in tears!

I'll admit you did start off with some 'reasonably' credible claims.
A 1.4 Vauxhall engine with DMTR carb would probably closely match the performance of a standard XR2/XR2i. (The DMTR is a fantastic cab that can fuel almost as well as a pair of 40s when correctly setup and the Vauxhall lumps do rev very well).
However, I regulary do ('do' as-in fly past with ease) standard Nova SRs and SRIs in my 1.6s Fiesta which is basically a 2i with a rubbish mk2 XR2 carb.

The point at which your argument becomes totaly laughable is when you say it'll see off RS Turbos and GTE Astras.
The mathematics just don't add up. A GTE and RST are pretty much capable of the same performance - which is high enough to reduce your Nova to a tiny spec on the horizon.
You're looking at cars with around 130bhp against a nova, probably pushing out around 90bhp if you're lucky, with the mods you have.

The 'Honda' guy has the right idea but misses the point a little. The point being money - he may have spent a lot on the Nova but it was spent over time and its cheap to insure. Even an old CRX is gonna cost £2000+ and a small mortgage to insure, unless you're over 50!

  25. turboJOE Rank: Staff Sergeant on 15th Feb 2004

yes but your talking about a jap motor which has absolutely nothing to do with the fords/vauxhalls and you would have to re-mortgage your house to tune it. a calibra turbo or cossie would obliterate your jap motor. with regards to the nova sr I once owned a peugeot 106 1.1 which would sit on an sr nova's bumper all day long, so an sr wouldnt stand a chance against an xr2 (a wicked little car) let alone an xr2i. a nova gte is a different matter though, i must admit. and just for the record as strange as it seems xr2is with cvh engines are no slower than those with 1800 16valvers, as early zetecs were a bit poo really

  26. dtmpallant on 16th Feb 2004

Point taken. but the extra money does buy a hell of lot of performance, I was simply making the point that there are better cars to benchmark a tuned motor against. The someone said their 1.4 SR was keepin a 1.6 vtec id have to take my hat off to them. Why not go down to a rwyb @ santa pod? Take some tools - try different ajustments between each run. At least that way your sure of a fair race, I.E both drivers paying attention and very similar driving conditions.

  27. gemmamckie on 15th Mar 2004

Vauxhall Novas are class, ive got one just had a full pearlescent purple re-spray done and full abyss bodykit put on. I can say it looks good and it picks up speed. Id say novas are the best old cars around and cheap to run.

  28. mad scotsman on 22nd Mar 2004

As a proud Nova owner I must put my veiws out to the rest of the world. It all started when I was 15, my mate bought a B plate 13SR with a worn cam shaft. He fitted a fast road kent cam and skimmed the head and flowed the ports, the words pocket rocket spring to my mind!.
Six months later I bought it off him and soon fitted a Janspeed 4 branch manifold. I saw off a volvo 440 turbo and many other 1600s and 2000 sadly it failed its MOT due to Nova rott. I then had a Peugeot 106, change the subject quick! french rubbish. Then I bought my G plate 14 SR , I hate to tell you XR2I boys I saw one off down the city bypass in my standard 14SR at 124MPH not a happy Fiesta owner let me tell you! Dont get me wrong my other car is a MK1 xr2 with a 167bhp 7500rpm twin 40 screamer.
My brother owns a single seat Vauxhall Lotus with over 250 bhp and weighs 550 kg thrilling but the Nova rules so all you little Corsa neds get a grip, the Nova still kicks butt!
Sadly my G plate failed its MOT, more holes than a tetley tea bag, so I bought a 1 litre merit and simply swapped just about every working part from the SR in 23 hours. Its now stripped to the max no interior ready for sprints and hill climbs long live the Nova!

  30. madscientist Rank: Lance Corporal on 19th Apr 2004

Sorry to be the party wrecker again, but I think your nova isn't as standard as you think, surely if someone has gone to all that time and effort on the anchors that means the engine isn't exactly standard , and by the relative performance your suggesting I belive it could be the case. 1, check the block codes (haynes manual) make sure someone hasn't already done an engine swap to a 1.6/8 ohc lump. 2, the engine could do with a strip after 10 years of service get a trusted mechanic to look at it tell you if its standard, bore, stroke, valve sizes, cam duration etc, don't do this at the same time as asking for an upgrade 'cos if it is modded, they'll fleece you and say they spent a days, when they checked and it took a hour or 2. 3, don't bother with the engine swap. The car will be undriveable close to the limit, torque steer will break your thumbs and there cheaper more reliable faster cars out there.

Yep i love Nova's gonna buy one soon, but id just like to say (and i know this is a bit off topic), but in all fairness my dad's Gsi will paste all the fiesta's, escort's and Nova's in this review.

Oh and btw its a Vectra Gsi, not a Nova Gsi (so its quite a bit quicker!

  33. jimmy86 Rank: Corporal on 26th Sep 2004

Eeeee. Nova = Shed on Wheels.
I saw an advert from a recorded video ages back the other day. It was good back "in zee ow'd day'z" ... but now ... look at it, the rear end ... probably has water leaking in , get a new car at least. - ie R reg or newer.

dont moan about this comment .. its just my opinion :)

  34. Novaspec Rank: Corporal on 23rd Jan 2005

I have a 1400 SR Nova with Kent Cam, Alloy Pulley, Lightened Flywheel, 32/34 TLDE Twin-Choke Weber (modded from a Tipo), 4-1 Sport Manifold and Magnex S/Steel System. It whips VTR/S's, Corsa's, XR2's and XR3's. I have 168BHP at the flywheel, about 120BHP at the wheels.
Novas may be old technology and very basic & cheap, but that dont mean they cant cut the ice. My 0-60 time, recorded at Silverstone, is 8.92s. My 1/4 mile sprint is 12.64s @ 113MPH.

  35. skallywag on 5th Feb 2005

Agree with the above - my 1.4 mk2 astra has similar tune up with re-bore and skimming. 0-62mph in 9.5secs originally 13.5. These small vaux engines are very tuneable!

  36. skallywag on 5th Feb 2005

Agree with Novaspec. I own 2 motors, one of which is an mk2 1.4 Astra special ed. It has a similar tune up to Novaspec's motor with addition of re-bore and skimming. Does 0-62mph in 9.5secs and top end 116+mph. These smaller vaux engines are very tuneable. Check out the 1.3 Nova Sport!

  37. emurray2005 Rank: Lance Corporal on 5th Feb 2005

Nova = Marmite... you either love them or you hate them. I can understand people hating these cars (all my mates) because lets face it, even the top model isn't that quick in standard form. But with a few engine mods, new suspension, a small amount of cosmetics and possibly a rear disc conversion you will have a car that performs on a par with a modded VTR (and looks as good in my opinion)! Although there's one clear reason why I would have the nova over ANY VTR.... and that's CHARACTER. Nova has truck loads, Saxo has none. Nova 1-0 Saxo.

  38. Bye Bye GTi Rank: Lance Corporal on 7th Feb 2005

I agree with the above but a GTE/GSi outperforms VTRs as standard by over a second to 60 so could someone please explain why a modded 1.6 Nova would only be on par with a modded VTR. I have owned two GSis and never had a VTR get even close to me. The Nova is over 200kgs lighter and has more power as stanard.

  39. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 8th Feb 2005

I've beat a saxo and I know people are going to say i'm a liar but I dont care. My 1.4 SR is very quick i've had 0-60 in just over 9 seconds and it flies.

  40. emurray2005 Rank: Lance Corporal on 8th Feb 2005

That's even better then! I just thought they were pretty level on performance, but i haven't even owned one so i withdraw the above to superior knowledge!

  41. Novaspec Rank: Corporal on 8th Feb 2005

Thats true. a standard GSI is more powerful and quicker than a VTR. I had some fun myself today, my little 1400 wolf-in-sheep's-clothing nova completely obliterated my mate's modded escort cossie. I'm well pleased with this motor which has cost VERY little.

  42. Novaspec Rank: Corporal on 18th Feb 2005

  43. NovalutionGSi on 15th Jun 2005

NovaSpec, you dreaming fella? after reading your review of your car i'm starting to laugh. you 1/4mile times are good, but more in line with being a LET nova not a 1.4SRi! the amount of BHP you claim you have is more in line with a lightly breathed on XE nova yet you 0-60 is about right of an Tuned SRi.

    Yes i do drive a Nova, a slightly modded GSi, running 16.4 1/4 mile 0-60 in 8.2, 112bhp@ fly and 80 bhp@ wheels.

  44. nova1981 on 12th Sep 2005

I own a Nova GTE standard and a Honda Prelude 2.2vtec although the Prelude is quicker than the Nova! The Nova is just so much fun to drive!! And to be honest all these 0-60 times don't mean anything if the driver just can't drive, take for instance me and my friend smoked a XR3i Escort in a 1.0 Micra off the lights due to my friend just being a better driver, there's no doubt the Escort had more torque and power and but hey, alls fair in love and war!!!

  45. MCDT on 1st Nov 2005

Here my m8 has a Vauxhall Nova 1.4 SR. and has now put a 2 litre 16V Astra GTE engine in it and it licks skylines and that. They won't even race him. Now he's decided to go a step up and put a V6 Engine in it you could amagine how quick thats gonna be. It will be like a matchbox with a beasty engine in it.

  46. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 9th Jan 2006

hate to spoil it for ya mate but the C20XE is a much better engine than the V6, believe me if you want performance stick with the GTE engine the V6 is toooo heavy

Since when are Corsa SRi's rapid?!? haha. Get yourselves 205 1.9 GTo's, run them with TB's, 4 branchs, straight throughs, MI injectors, induction behind LH head light, ported head, FSe's, Kent cams and maga squirt ECU's, and wave a friendly goodbye to your Vauxhall and Ford pish in the dust! On back roads too!

  48. GsiFan Rank: 2nd Lieutenant on 15th Jan 2007

I now have a race spec 1400 SR engine. It's quick lol, believe me. Though I'll have to agree with the last comment about MIG 205's being stupidly quick... My mate has one.

  49. Georgey48 on 5th Sep 2007

As much as you hectors amuse me with your Magnex exhausts and K n N filters, you're not really accomplishing anything much to speak of. If I can suggest some reading material that should save you having to get into discussions about how fast a Nova/XR2 goes when its got a tail pipe the size of part of the London sewage system. Buy yourself "How to build Horsepower" by Davis Visard. Unfortunately I haven't written a book yet but this should give you the very basics of how engines work and what contributes to them producing power. I wish you all luck with what ever Jallopy you chose to drive.

  50. novastyle on 7th Sep 2007

I have a 2.0 16v Red Nova. I built it myself. Got twin 40's Kent Cams and a 4branch. It runs at 255bhp. The wheels cost me around £2000, on mods. Fitted my self full leather interior, kingdom kit, digi dashcost. About another grand and it will take out my mate's 350bhp Scooby. I had a Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo on my tail and it couldn't take me!

I’ve just bought a nova 1.4sri I also have to other cars a clio1.2 and a Clio 1.4 I no over the top but my Clio 1.2 got a bigger thrashing and I killed it, but still my one for also struggled with that speed I haven’t top my nova out as I'm scared I will ruin the car its had £4000 on the body kit and respray its also running on 18inc and lowered 60mm front and back. Also strut bars are in plays and brakes have been upgraded so the handling perfect just needs the power now. I'm now looking for modifying it has a race exhaust and induction kit but I want bigger power without getting a new engine any ideas would be a great help.
