When I was 18, I went overdrawn on my Visa electron card when I was abroad. I didn't have an overdraft limit, but I had enough cash in my account, should the cheques I put in 8 days before had cleared. I drew the money out and it let me. I was only doing £10 at a time about 4 or 5 times, and the occasional £5 T-Mobile top up, which was well within my balance. When my Abbey statement arrived, I was shocked to find I had £240 worth of charges; yes £240!!!! They had charged me around £40 for each transaction made over 3 days. So when I went past my limit (£0) by £5 it was charging me £40!! I went mad and questioned it at the branch. I demanded that they remove these charges, because not only were they ridiculous, there wouldn't be any if they'd cleared the cheques when I put them in, as normal. They declined, and I wrote to the ombudsman, only to be sent a standard letter, quoting loads of legal jargon. I begrudgingly paid the fines, and I have subsequently closed down the account with them. Another thing is, the call centres are in some foreign country, where not only can I not understand what they're saying, but they can't understand me. And although they try to help, they don't understand a word I'm saying, and therefore, it is a complete waste of time.
