Food.
Everything but the food.
I have flown SATA a few times now, mostly from Boston but once from London, with the destination always being Ponta Delgada, to visit my family there. The airline dominates the route therefore gorging passengers with outrageous airfare for a very poor product.
I flew quite a lot, mainly United and Delta, for work trips and Swiss, Lufthansa, Air France when traveling to Europe. People may have poor opinions of US carriers, even some European airlines but any American carrier is far superior to SATA, even when they are in bankruptcy. United has a wonderful, award winning, premium economy cabin and Delta has terrific customer care with very friendly cabin and ground staff.
If improvement could be made in only one area it should undoubtedly be customer service. The attitude of the cabin, ground and telephone crew is the worst that I have ever experienced, consistently poor, rude manners on every of the several flights I have flown with them. I don't have much of a choice, like I said, they dominate the route. The cabin of the Airbus is quite uncomfortable. Yes, I know, it's economy but there is such a thing as having a good, sometimes outstanding economy experience on flights. Furthermore, SATA is often at times tardy and it's not for weather reasons. The only positive comment I have is that they tend to have good quality meals in both economy and business.
I sincerely hope that another carrier competes for this route from the US, perhaps competition will improve the overall quality of SATA. I think maybe next time I will take a fishing boat across the Atlantic.
