I am an Australian citizen with a British passport. I have been in England for 4 years, and have thus far banked with Lloyds. My partner has banked with Barclays for much of his life, and we therefore decided to open a joint account. I have no debt, and I am a professional in the financial services industry. I would have presumed Barclays would want me as a customer... However, following numerous phone calls to an unhelpful call centre, visiting branches (where I was assured there would be no problem), I have finally been informed that although I now have a joint account with my partner, I am not eligible for a debit card with that account (although he has had one for the past 12 months), and I am not eligible for a current account of my own.
I am disgusted a business of this scale and reputation, operates (if you can call it that) with such miserably low customer service.
More fool them - my partner has a half million pound property, and we are intending to re-invest in further mortgages, so it is fairly clear we will not be selecting Barclays...

I had a similar experience with Halifax so I wouldn't recommend them either... wish i would have read these comments before moving to Barclays I also have had nothing but problems with them too. Is there no bank out there that can provide good customer services.
