Good Points

Fast-paced, when first aired the graphics seemed really good. Financial rewards and prizes were quite impressive for their time.
Fantastic to play along at home.

I wasn't a fan of Mr Chips.

General Comments

I really enjoyed Catchphrase so I'll say what I saw. This fast-paced game show was usually aired on a weekend in an early evening slot. The most recognised host of this popular quiz was genial Irish funnyman Roy Walker, who was renowned for his quick-fire repartee and banter. The game principally featured a selection of computerized animations and the contestants would have to buzz in to have a guess at the "catchphrase" hidden by the cryptic animations, many of these animations featured the wacky Mr Chips who was kind of Roy's assistant. A correct guess would be rewarded with a cash prize and would also reveal a segment of the "Bonus Catchphrase," a chance to win even bigger money, good hand-eye co-ordination was required to reveal the most valuable segment. The winner of the game was the contestant who had the most cash at the end of the main game. The winning contestant would then qualify for a go at the "Super Catchphrase," a grid of 25 squares needed to be negotiated from one side to the other, but incorporating the crucial central M square, should this be done in the 60 seconds provided then the contestant could win a fabulous holiday. This part of the show was later altered as the show recieved a makeover in later years. Catchphrase was one of my favourites and I would highly recomend viewing the repeats which are aired on the Challenge television station. Despite its success, Catchphrase is probably most famous for two very bizarre incidents. In one of them, a later Catchphrase presenter, Nick Weir, slipped down some steps whilst presenting the show and broke his foot. This incident is often replayed on various "tv blooper" style shows. Brilliant family fun. "It's good but it's not right."
